Torque Converter Removal?

Hey guys, I just picked up a spare engine to start building for my P5T. The time now has come to start tearing the engine down. Unfortunately the donor car was an auto so I've got the torque converter hanging off the front of the engine. Now I have the FSM but it isn't very very descriptive when it comes to removing the torque converter; it just says "remove bolts" or something like that. I've been looking at the converter and it looks like it's welded to the drive plate! I was just wondering if anyone had any more detailed explanations or pictures as to how to do this.

FWIW, I've searched but all I come up with are threads dealing with catalytic converters or the torque specs of various bolts.

So apparently it really just is four bolts that need to be removed. I thought the torque converter was welded to the drive plate but I guess it only just appears that wayToo bad I can't keep the damned thing from spinning by myself. Definitely a job where it's good to have a friend. I'm letting the bolts soak in some PB blaster and I'll give it a go another day.

take off the starter and spin the motor and look through the starter hole and youll see the nuts for the bolts there are 4 of them every 90*

hope it helps

Yeah thanks. The start is long gone and I figured this was probably the case. I tried breaking the bolts loose last Sunday but they were stuck good! Soaked 'em in PB Blaster and the weather will be warmer this weekend so maybe I'll have a fighting chance. It's hard to keep the crankshaft from turning when it's just me by myself.

idk why but i didnt have a problem with this then again i used a 3/8th impact when i took mine off so that probally why lol

but good luck to you bro
ive had my trans out for about 3 weeks now and im just waitin for my god dam torque converter because my protege is my dd and i drive in heavy traffic so i dont want to have a 5 spd

Yes, an impact wrench would be immensely useful. If only I could find a place that would rent one out or something because I also need to get the crankshaft pulley off as well.

i'd loan you mine.. but that's far to ship a gun of that expense..

you need that special mazda tool that goes in the starter spot and has teeth that holds the flywheel in 1 spot. or a friend with a breaker bar and big arms

what are you doing that you need to get the crank pully off?
This is a spare engine that I'm tearing down for a build. I need to get the block by itself so I need to strip everything off of it.

Agreed.

Would this work even without the transmisson bolted to the block?

which part are you referring to? To remove the crankshaft pulley off first you must remove the torque converter. Then screw in 2 long bolts (must be strong bolts) into the drive plate across from each other. Wedge a breaker bar into the 2 bolts and have your friend with the big arms hold that ****** still while you break off the crank shaft pulley.

Either really. I want to get the torque converter off first to try something like what you suggested. It's just hard to remove anything on those two parts because the engine keeps turning on me.

The only way i can think of taking off the torque converter without an impact is that tool that holds the flywheel in place. Maybe you can rent one from autozone.

you know what. if you want. pay for shipping, and i can send it to you.

i have 2. one snap on 3/8" impact, and a 1/2" impact

both are powerful.

Unless they are electric, I wouldn't be able to use them. I don't have the space for an air compressor and a full set of air tools. I'm going to have a go at the engine again tomorrow because the bolts have been soaked in PB Blaster and the weather is supposed to be warmer. If they still won't break free I'm open for other suggestions.

they're both electric(battery powered) .. so let me know. i'm willing to help out.. but gotta be careful. they're like 500.00 each!
