I just stumbled across a 1992 Toyota Supra (MKIII) with a 1JZ-GTE engine conversion at a great price. The seller had taken it off the market & is not actively seeking a buyer, but is willing to part with it, as he owns too many cars.

Problem is, I cannot justify owning the MS3 and that Supra at the same time. But since I love Supras, I am sorely tempted to see if I can work something out.

Come Monday, I think I'm going to call the bank & see what my loan payoff is, just to see if it's even remotely possible that I can sell the MS3 for what I owe on it. I kinda doubt it, even though I got a good deal, and have been paying a little extra on the principle every month. I've only made 12 payments, after all. I just gotta know.

I'm not disappointed in any way with the MS3- just a complete & total Supra fanboi, and I'd hate to pass up this opportunity. It would cost me twice as much as this guy's asking to buy a used MKIII Supra & do the engine swap.

Well, Since I'm an old guy and old school, I'd wait until I could pay cash for a used car.
Finance charges eat people alive. Don't get eaten.

PS. Still love the shirts.

Do you own another vehicle?

Here's why I ask. Once upon a time I had a 95 Eclipse GSX. I loved that car to death but I had taken it to a point that it was a chore to drive everyday. It was a combination of the car being older and it being highly modified, which it sounds like this Supra is both. I was tired of the constant maintenance and "supervision" that the car required and I wanted something new and care free, hence the MS3. If it were me, you couldn't pay me to have a car like that again as my only source of transportation. It was a lot of fun but knowing that my MS3 is going to reliably take me anywhere I want to go and all I have to do is put gas in it is worth a whole lot more to me than that 500hp DSM was. YMMV

I wouldn't be taking out a loan for the Supra. No worries there. I'd never get a loan for a used car more than a couple of years old.

I just cannot justify spending the money on the Supra and keeping the MS3 at the same time. And I'd rather not have to subsudize the sale of the MS3 with my own cash, y'know?

Very glad you're enjoying the shirts! I can't wear them to work any more, as my employer instituted a rule against shirts with logos. Even though I work graveyard shift in a private office building where there are no customers, and the public isn't even allowed on the property. Go figure.

Valid caution. Also part of my thought process. No, I do not currently own another vehicle. BUT, I used to own a MKIII Supra, and the stock 7M-GTE engine is inherently flawed- bad head design, blows head gaskets left & right with any sort of power mods. That car literally contributed to bankrupting me. (long story)

This Supra having the 1JZ engine in it is actually a big positive. The 1JZ was designed for the MKIII Supra, so it is a direct factory fit, as opposed to some sort of highly modded Frankenstein project. But it was only used in Japan-never in this country. The JZ series engines had none of the design flaws of the older 7M series. The engine itself only has basic power mods, so it is WELL within its power handling capabilities. 1JZ's are 280hp stock, easily capabe of 500whp. I'll never ask it for more than 400.

On the other hand, I would likely keep my eye open for a cheap motorcycle to use as backup transportation when the Supra is down for any sort of extended maintenance or repairs.

Hey, If it's something you really want, go get it. I just like the newer models for a daily driver. My last car was a 1995 Cadillac, when it hit 30,000 miles in 2008, I gave it to my daughter. I went down to get another Caddy and came home with the Speed3. Go figure, but I'm having fun with it.

I can wear my shirts all the time. Been retired for 6 years. lol

I can't ever own less than three cars, I feel naked with just two. man up keep the MS3, and buy the damn supra

My advice? Sell the MS3, get an MZ3 and the supra. TA-DA! You can remain loyal to us mazda folk and get your supra... it's a win-win!

hahaha Id say just go with your gut!! If your gut is telling you to get the car then go get the car! But it seems like your trying to justify buying the car!

I understand the excitement around Supras but I would have to come up with an extremely good reason to trade for a car that's 17 years older.
