Too much Antifreeze = clattering & overheating.

Well, in a moment of utter stupidity, I accidentally overfilled my antifreeze reservoir and now my car is overheating. Hopefully, I have not caused any long term damage. I'm also noticing a clattering sound in low RPM's as I accelerate. Its faint and it vanishes once I'm up to speed, but pulling away from lights, there a faint clattering noise coming from somwhere. Is this something I should be worried about? The clattering has been going on for a while.

Okay, the mechanic said the antifreeze level is fine and I didn't overfill as I thought. The problem seems to be a faulty thermostat. When my car overheats, the coolant reservoir gets too full and it spills out of the overflow tube. But after driving my car back from having the oil change, everything seemed fine, except for the smell of antifreeze. So I'm hoping the thermostat is covered under the extended warranty I purchased which is still good until I hit 95K miles. I'll have them look into the clatter too.

If you have the time to wait, why not get the JDM stuff? I think protegegarage carries it. I've got my JDM cap, still waiting for the thermostat.

The best thing to do is let it run with the cap off for a minute or so to let the system burp up any bubbles. Unless in your case if the themostat is bad it will just throw it all out on the ground.

can I get a link to a how to. I did a search but didn't really find instructions, just diagnosis of the problem.

That would be good to know. My wife's P5 kind of went through the same thing but I want to check/replace the thermostat just in case.

It's not to difficult.

1. Drain all the coolant out of the radiator (Remove radiator cap first. If you have a manual transmission, it will be a butterfly nut you turn near the center bottom of the radiator If automatic, it will be a phillips head screw on the bottom near the center of the radiator).
2. Find the lower radiator hose. Disconnect it from where it runs into the engine.
3. The part where it was connected to is the thermostat housing. Remove the bolt holding it on and remove the housing.
4. Then pull the thermostat out (pay attention to how it was in there so you know which way to put the new one in). Put the new one in using the new gasket it should have come with.
5. Reattach the Thermostat housing and lower radiator hose. Then refill the radiator with antifreeze and you should be good to go.

This is from looking at the shop manual for the Protege5. I've never changed a thermostat on this car, but have on many others. From the shop manual, it looks to be as easy/easier than most cars. Good luck!

i had the exact same problem about a week ago and i brought it into the mechanic and i got my thermostat changed, collant flush etc and it came out to 188$ including labour. felt expensive but at least its fixed!

Pwned by the tow-truck!

thanks for all the info.

Did you figure out the clatter? Is it a tin-like clatter? I've been trying to figure it out for the past week...

I'm also experiencing those symptoms...I was driving home tonight(stop and go) and out of nowhere i notice my temp needle creeping up to "Hot"... It would go down once I would start driving and then go back up at a stop. When I got home i popped the hood and noticed that the coolant tank it about 1 inch from the top(way-too-much coolant)....

Yes, its a tin like clatter while accelerating and it audible at low RPMs. The overheating was due to a faulty thermostat and valve which were replaced. The dealership said they could not hear the clatter, but I still hear it. I guess you have to know what to listen for.

Someone suggested it might be the heat shield rattling but I'm not sure.

started around 4pm and finished at 530ish... not bad. Thanks for all of the help, indirect but helpful!

indeed it was the thermostat... changed it and let it idle for 15 min and the needle didn't budge from normal operating temp.

And I found the rattle, in fact it is a heatshield... My issue is the heatshield between the headers and the cat(under the car)...

to the OP, have fun getting your car back after driving that Z after a few days. Just remember that there's nothing wrong with it. It's just really that slow :D

were you able to tighten it? If so how? I need to tighten mine also.
