to buy or not

Total newby here.
I am looking at two different 2003 Protege 5's. One's an unmodified 5spd w/59k, leather and sunroof for $9900.

The other is this (from the listing): "$8999, 92351k, Silver, 5spd, racing profile tires w/ 17'' gun metal custom wheels, an 2003 J-spec FS-ZE (2.0L-4 cyl) w/43000 miles on it, full Magnaflow exhaust system including AEM cold air intake and OBX racing headers, TWM short shifter, ACT Street Performance Clutch Kit, MAZDASPEED Lightweight flywheel, Pioneer sound system w/Bluetooth and sat/I-pod ready an a custom interior paint job that completes a well rounded car. This car has better MPG than normal Mazda Prot g 5s (MP5) thanks to the FS-ZE engine. THIS ENGINE GETS 34/36 MPG with a whopping 175 horse power. This car was owned by a Non-smoker and is very clean."

Now, I'm not a mechanic and ease of maintenance and reliability are a big plus (ie: nearby recommended Japanese auto shop for routine work is preferable to hunting custom guys for frequent tuning).

Assuming all the mods are done right (how do I tell?) and it's in good tune at the moment, does the lower price and higher MPG make it worth it. Will getting it fixed and/or keeping it tuned be too frequent or specialized for me? What do these type of mods mean to the car's emissions controls? I mean, I like the idea of a more powerful quick car, but I have to admit, the better gas mileage is more of a draw than speed for me. And I don't want to get in over my head repair wise.

thanks

You live in Washington...haha...saw that P5 on Craigslist...

Personally, the price is right on, but as I read it, it has a salvage title...even tho it doesn't necessarily affect the performance of the car it does impact the value and the resale value you may want to get down the line..

I don't trust the MPG...I don't trust anyone's MPG on this forum either...cause mine generally sucks ass so bad...and as far as the "tuning", it's still running the stock computer, which doesn't really run the FS-ZE as well as it can...I don't know the car, I don't know the owner, and therefore I wouldn't get the modified car...You don't know how it's been treated and mis-treated through the years....

Also...shop around a bit and you'll find a better price than both those around here...

This is a good time to car shop...Finally like 4-5 days without rain...(hippy)

I'm with Wiprotege5, buy the unmodified, Modified cars you dont know how hard the person was on the engine and tranny, usually you only heavily mod a car that much to drag/street race it~i'd go the safe route and get the sexy black on blue~not to mention you cant go wrong with the leather in the protege, i love mine :P

175 hp? Did we miss the part about the turbo or what? :D

Hey at least test drive the modded one, run it hard, thank the guy, then go buy the other one!

get the stock one. for all u know the modded one might have been driven to hell and back haha. the one in that craigslist that wiprotege5 posted seems good. if u plan to do mods, make them on ur own xD u get a nice feeling when u customize ur own car instead of buying some1 else's.

Ya man, Japanese spec FS-ZE....

Running the OBD1 harness & ECU, manifolds, internals, heads and what not needed for that mill to make 175 HP? This I'd have to see in person. On a dyno.

When you say, 'i want to have a mechanic be able to work on it/reliability is key' - buy the clean/un-modded car.

Me? I am a mech and would have put all that stuff on anyway - that is the car i might buy (if the installs looked clean). New motor? He blew the old one racing (NNNAAAWWWZ baby!) - so how is the tranny? ;)

I'll be the 12th person to say go with the stock one. The one that is all modded was more likely to have been beat on than the stock one (you can never be 100% sure, but your odd are probably a lot better with the stock one). Plus, as others have said you will get the fun of building up your car to whatever level you want.
