Tires, Wheel Bearing or Axel

Im hopping to get some input here.

So I got a 02 Protege 5 and Im getting some issues and Im not sure which my problem could be but I dont want to start changing parts.

So It started out slowly but came on with in liek 2 weeks or so.

I would get a loud noise that sounded like tire noise but it changes only slightly when I make a turn either left or right.

Now I would like you think ok. its is your tires. Well I rotated them and it didnt even sound like it moved at all.

So that got me thinking its all the tires but they are in good shape.

I checked the axel and it has a little bit of play but nothing clear cut.

I checked to see if there is any play in the bearing but no dice either.

I think I should get 2 new tires and work from there but that $250 I jsut dont have.

the noise gets louder as I go

I had a similar noise about a month back and it was my wheel bearings. Unless you are sure what it is, I would take it to a shop. That way you are not blow money on things you don't need.

Yeah I was trying to avoid being a parts changer.

any one ever hear of our carrier bearing going bad?? I realyl have a feeling that could be a problem also.

I mad an appointment at the dealership since they are the only people i trust. Id rather pay jsut a littel bit more and know its right then pay less and worry. Plus I used to work there so they know me,

its gotten worse which stinks but I think im done driving it after tomorrow for a while until it gets fixed.

did you check your calipers cause, my right front side ceased up on me about a 3 months ago and it made almost the same sounds your describing.

Ill check it but Im not sure its it. my braking hasnt really changed like ti did when the other (driver side) seized up.

its worth a shot. could save me some cash

Sounds like a wheel bearing to me. Mine started making noise over the course of a few weeks. If you're up to it, they're fairly easy to replace yourself for only about $75 in parts.

I'd say it's definitely the wheel bearing, too. I had the exact same problem a couple of weeks back. The noise was getting louder and louder each day.

Only problem now is, now that the bearing has been replaced, I can here the 'clunk' from the rear stabilizer bushings...

i have noticed since we had a few warm days here in NY that its worse in the cold then in warmer weather.

Still wheel bearing

i have a gut feeling its my tires. i got some over sized handcooks on there

Tires can sometimes sound like a bearing noise. Rotating the tires should move the problem if tires are the problem, unless all tires have the same wear pattern.

yeah thats what im thinking. I might see if I can put the wifes 6's rims and tires on my car and see if i hear the different.

I rotate them enough to where they are all the same. and I replace all 4 ususally.

They are all worn evenly. I think its jsut the hardness of the tire and the treads.

anyone know if the M6's 17s fit on a P5?

If the tires are in bad enough shape to be making a bunch of noise, then you should probably be able to tell just by looking at them. Check for bulges or splits or exposed belts, etc...
