Tired of blown engines/turbos? How about a CAL?

Lets face it the speed3/6 just arent reliable, theirs always that worry factor if youl blow or not. I would def get rid of mine for an sti if i could. Plus Subaru doesnt give a s*** about mods. You can bring em a fully bolted sti with a 35r on it and theyll waranty it (atleast around here they do).. You want a reliable car that can handle 450whp stock, figure out how to bolt a sti tranny to a evo9 motor lol

yea not to rain on your parade but were both from LI and no dealership will warranty aftermarket parts. I autoX almost every weekend and almost all the subie guys in the stu stx classes have voided warranties for one reason or another. Only one guy still has his, but he's got ties in with the owner of the dealership.

my guess about the subaru dealers not caring about mods during dealer visits is probably cuz all those guys do s*** to their own subarus. the mazda dealers i go to don't drive ms3's. in fact, i think a couple of them have sti's lol

Uh? your motor didn't pop bone-stock. Didn't you say the drain plug came out and your motor lost all oil....that's what caused it to pop. You have a crappy situation, but your motor didn't just "pop" because it's a POS, you had a POS shop was the problem, and an unfortunate situation with Mazda.

To start, I've never said the car or the motor is a POS. Nor did I say that the oil drain plug fell out, that is Mazda NAO & the RSM's unsubstantiated opinion.

My wife was very pleased with the operation of the car during the short time it was running. and It was compoletely stock.

Mazda NAO's handling of the warranty claim has been completely unfair and improper.

I'm not in a panic. Re-reading my posts it looks like I'm dying to get out of this car. I'm not but I admit it makes me nervous, the whole blown motor thing. I agree that most blown motors are probably easily explained (mods, no tune, driving the sh!t out of it... ) but I gotta say, it really makes sense when people talk about the weak rods being too stressed and eventually POP. That theory seems to have a lot of credibility.
I just got a promotion and raise to I am looking to upgrade my ride. I really like the WRX but I also like the new MS3 (after seeing it in person). I will likely be getting one or the other and only putting factory mods on until warranty is up.
A lot of my decision will be based on how Mazda handles the issue of my smoking turbo. If they don't do the right thing there I know I could not count on them for anything else, like a blown motor.

Doesn't a CX-7 have the same engine and drive train?
Are they having all the egine problems I'm reading about?

the engine is the same, the turbo is smaller. some have reported having issues, but the big difference is most cx-7 owners do not have the same mindset as MS3/MS6 owners. To them its a 245hp suv, no different than any other one out there

Where'd you see that the turbo is smaller? The engines are all identical. Still uses the K04.

i remember reading about it a while back. heres a snip from motortrend, yes its the same ko4 but a different trim if iirc

"Based on the Mazdaspeed6's 274-horse engine, the CX-7's turbo features a smaller inlet. This accelerates the exhaust flow to increase low- and midrange boost at some expense to high-speed performance. "

I think this statment says it all about blown engines and why Mazda isn't doing much about it.

the mindset doesnt necessarily mean immaturity. its also how the car is marketed. the cx-7 is an suv and marketed for its roominess, fuel consumption, price etc. whereas the ms3/6 is a "performance car" and the "ultimate zoom zoom". so naturally the intended crowd is different as are overall driving habits. If it wasnt, everyone would have the mz3/6.

you cant tell me that marketing a car that tears around the 'ring and boasts best power in class is not meant to be driven as such. and doing so is not the way the car was intended to drive. its just like the cold weather testing, or lack thereof with these cars. In winter my car creaks and groans more than anything ive ever driven, the tranny fluid turns to syrup and makes shifting a b****. and the clutch pedal barely rises until the fluid temps go up. i think mazda has some serious quality control issues and thats the big problem. but its easier and better for them to push it off on the consumer than admit they made an inferior product, tarnishing the brand name

I don't know how much of this is quality control really. You've got a NA 2.3l 4cyl that runs great, has great torque and has won Engine of the Year awards. Then you force feed it and I just think a couple things when unnoticed. If there's any quality control issues, it has a lot to do with the turbo. The K04 Hitachi unit is a cheap and bad design. Ford did their EcoBoost right by using Honeywell (Garrett).

quality control goes beyond the scope of the engine....its the whole car as a package.

But given that's a variable thats next to impossible to perfect on any car, and especially since it's a part brought down from another company, it'd be hard to suspect visually that "oo..it's not going to seal right, this may smoke one day".

And that's just being fair to Mazda. Otherwise, I agree, this shouldn't be happening, hence the motivation to start the thread.

thats why they have test mules that get the s*** beaten out of them. to make sure the product is not flawed once heading to market. I wouldnt be fair to mazda. they've got loads of cash that should have been spent on quality control testing. there is no reason a car with 10k miles should rattle more than my 1996 grand am with 120k on it. o and btw i was denied the dexcool claim when i went in at 58k miles...

being pretty heavily modded does worry me at times about this car, but as the saying goes. you pay to play. whether anyone wants to see it or not. these cars are greatly flawed. look at what PTperformance has brought up. with their research they've shown on even stock speeds they will eventually blow. if i could find/post the thread to it here i would but its over on the other forum. most of you will read it and probably get really worried then hah. but, for now the cars good. fun to drive but even that only last so long. im thinking of just unbolting everything from the car an leave the cai bpv an mm and sell the rest an buy some nice ass wheels an good coilovers an be done with it. these cars feel good stock anways.

LOL i've never gotten my 94 GA or 03 GA covered under warranty. Infact, on my 03, I never fixed it and traded it in. Chew on that!

The PCV and turbo smoking is very unique though. Typically can't be duplicated unless idled for long periods of time. I doubt the test mules sat idling for 20 minutes at a time until they noticed smoking. Either way, it sucks!

1. u cant tell me the ms3 is "very reliable". If they were they wouldnt be popping. Especaially considering sum that popped were bone stock
2. idk if all subaru dealers care. But the ones near me dont. A friend of mine has a fully bolted 08sti and he just got his cracked motor mount replaced under waranty. Another one got his shaddered pistons repalced with a turbo bak intake and boost controller, covered completley by waranty. So idk..

"the mindset doesnt necessarily mean immaturity"

It does in the eyes of Mazda and there service depts.

+1000,, thats exactly what im in the middle of doing. ms3/6 are just not reliable period.

why market and advertise a car that makes 16psi if doing so will blow the motor or cause some kind of failure? why have there been 3 revisions of the turbo since the ms6? kinda gotta point the finger in mazda's direction at this point.
