tire troubles, any advice?

Purchased a Mazda3 5 months ago. Within 3 weeks the car was run against a curb, which required replacing the right front wheel and tire.Just recently during icy weather the car skidded on ice going in to a parking lot, bumped the curb, and the left front tire had to be replaced.
My ??? Are there tires/wheels that will fit this car that are not going to need replacing after making contact with a curb going less than 10 mph?
Is there any recourse for dealing with the tire store who sold my uninformed teenage son the second tire (he purchased it while I was out of town,in the hopes I wouldn't find out, duh). He was sold a different tire than the other 3 on the car and when I drove it yesterday the car was pulling to the right, so I looked and discovered the new tire. There is now serious wear on the right front tire that was replaced a few months ago.
This is too much tire trouble for my mom brain. Help...useful advice?

Ummm, learn NOT to hit the curb?

Seriously, if you're still under the warranty, you can go to the dealership and they will replace your tires for free.

Low profile tires, like those being used on many of todays sporty cars, look great, but unfortunately they are much more susceptable to damage from curbs and potholes, as you have figured out.

They won't be covered by the Mazda warranty since the problem was caused by hitting curbs.

I doubt that you have any recourse with the tire shop, although you can try. If they sell the same brand as the other 3 tires they may offer to trade it out, although I doubt it.

I would go and get the wheel alignment checked if you have an excessive amount of wear on the right front tire. There may have been damage beyond the tire. It might be as simple as getting it re-aligned, but you could have bent parts and it certainly ought to be checked out.

Bad tires

The stock Goodyear tires on the Mazda 3's are awful, dangerous, and probably the reason for the slide into the curb in the first place. Don't expect any help from Mazda though. Complaints have been made to them for some time.

I replaced my Goodyear tires at 11,000 after barely getting home in a snow storm. The difference in handling in wet, snowy, or just cold conditions is remarkable.

For more information about the tires, go to tirerack.com, enter the type of tire on the car, and read the customer reviews. If you indeed have the Goodyear tires on the car, you'll find the comments very interesting.

You'll also find a thread from a year or so ago on this forum that discusses the Mazda 3's stock tires (in not flattering terms).

I bought Avon tires through Tire Rack and have been much happier with the handling since then.

Good luck!
