I'm not too sure if this is a repost. I apoligize if it is but I thought it would be good for everyone to know, esp with gas prices rising.

Well I was reading on another forum and found this interesting post:

TIPS ON PUMPING GAS (Good information)

I don't know what you guys are paying for gasoline.... but here in
California we are paying up to $3.50 per gallon. My line of work is in
petroleum - for about 31 years now, so here are some tricks to get more
of your money's worth for every gallon..

Here at the Kinder Morgan Pipeline, where I work in San Jose , CA, we
deliver about 4 million gallons in a 24-hour period thru the pipeline.
One day is diesel, the next day is jet fuel, and gasoline, regular and
premium grades. We have 34-storage tanks here with a total capacity of
16,800,000 gallons.

Only buy or fill up your car or truck in the early morning when the
ground temperature is still cold. Remember that all service stations
have their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the ground the
more dense the gasoline. When it gets warmer gasoline expands, so
buying in the afternoon or in the evening your gallon is not exactly a
gallon.
In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and the temperature of
the gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products
plays an important role.
A 1-degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business.
But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the
pumps.

When you're filling up do not squeeze the trigger of the nozzle to a
fast mode.
If you look you will see that the trigger has three (3)
stages: low, middle, and high.
In slow mode you should be pumping on low speed, thereby minimizing the
vapors that are created while you are pumping.
All hoses at the pump have a vapor return.
If you are pumping on the fast rate, some of the liquid that goes to
your tank becomes vapor. Those vapors are being sucked up and back into
the underground storage tank so you're getting less for your money's
worth!

One of the most important tips is to fill up when your gas tank is HALF
FULL or HALF EMPTY. The reason for this is that the more gas you have in
your tank the less air occupying its empty space. Gasoline evaporates
faster than you can imagine. Gasoline storage tanks have an internal
floating roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the gas and
the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation. Unlike service
stations, here where I work, every truck that we load is temperature
compensated so that every gallon is actually the exact amount.

Another reminder, if there is a gasoline truck pumping into the storage
tanks when you stop to buy gas, DO NOT fill up. Most likely the
gasoline is being stirred up as the gas is being delivered, and you
might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on the bottom.

Hope this will help you get the most value for your money.

Not as good as you think... FWIW

Liquids don't compress like gas. Buy a Chevy sprint or geo metro is this s*** concerns you.

yea..liquids don't compress...that's pascal's law (and why we have brake fluid)

the only part i agree with is the last part about not filling up while the tank is being filled by a truck (absolutely agree). but everything else sounds like saving in mass quantities (like where this guy works). everything else to an average car would be minimal savings.

oh and if you want to save $ AA batteries just buy a 6volt and bust it open(braindead

incorect weight of gas changes acording to temp. when gas is colder it weighs more then warmer. thats one reason aircraft go off weight of fuel not measured in galons.

i keep my car at 1/4 tank, i put in about 2.7 gallons at a time ($10) and i average 26mph...i do it for the weight..figured less gas in my car, less weight = more mileage + OWNAGE

im going to pump my gas differently now...i guess this gives a new meaning to the early bird special

Obviously you did not read the truth as quoted in the Snope link.
In short, don't waste you time, which is worth much more then the tiny tiny amount of fuel you MAY save.(idhitit)

I didn't bother to read the Snopes article, because the quote is so obviously b.s. Those tanks are underground, and not just an inch or two. The principle behind heat pumps is that once you get a couple of feet underground the temperature doesn't change by more than a couple of degrees day to day. In other words, it is very stable, so how the hell is the temperature of gasoline in underground tanks going to change enough during the course of the day to make a difference? Before the flamers start, I know the "frost line" varies depending on where you live, but that is a temp change over the course of an entire season, not on the same day.

any one who rides a motorcycle knows that few things in this world are as nice as a tank of ice cold gas in August to cool your scorched bag (through pants)

= more mileage? lol

more like = more time wasted pumping gas! As someone already mentioned... the difference in weight between a 1/4 full tank and a completely full tank is negligible for most of us. (I mean really, unless you're at the track and ever fraction of a second counts, who gives a s*** about an extra 50lbs?) I always laugh at those who take all the carpeting and sound insulation out of their car, replace the hood and trunk.. just to save... what? 100 lbs maybe? some of the s*** people do is just plain idiotic!

haha...never even thought of that. mine has a tank cover on it (instead of the paint protector strip down the middle) so i guess i never had that problem. the black seat is the problem if you don't park in the shade(shocked)
