Tips for Cleaning Exhaust Chrome

Never had a chrome exhaust tip - what's the best way to keep it clean and shiny? Every time I think of cleaning it - the car's just been driven - and common sense tells me to not even think of cleaning it then - as it's probably hot.

Thanks in advance for any ideas/advice.

Just wiping it with a lightly damp paper towel should work fine...maybe at each fillup? I have a lot of soot on mine, and it's normally cool enough at the end of a fillup for a quick wipe. Metal/Chrome polish will remove subborn soot/carbon buildup.

Yep, was gonna say the same thing. Doesn't really need any special care... damp paper towel is perfect because you shouldn't really reuse the rag as I'm sure the soot is mildly abrasive (ie, a no-no to paint).

And yes, wait until the thing is cool ;)

what kind of driving would produce carbon/sooth build up on the mz5 tail pipe? Ours is 2006 and I don't see carbon build up. My friends cx-7 does have lots of carbon build up.

I clean mine with barkeepers friend on the inside and car wash soap on the outside. The fuel additives used in your regional gas combined with the tuning and normal functions of the engine all contribute to the soot residue. Clean it often and it won't build up.

Thanks one and all for the input.

(I haven't studied the dirt down there - but I suspect a lot of it is less soot and more road dirt and crud, splashed up from 2000+ miles worth of spring rains. Either way - I now know how to clean it.)

Ahem... Please remember to clean it while it's COOL!!!hehehe (headbang)

(scratch), good point.... (lol2)

Anyway, I think answers posted already. I just wipe the thing when washing, then I pass a dry rag to make it shine once done...

if you really want to get anal about it, they make a chrome cleaner that works wonders on it. I got some a really long time ago for things on my P5 and use it on the exhaust tip. It makes me very very shiny!!!

I use mothers; "No shine like Mothers"...... once a month or so..... keeps it nice and shinny; also provides a good coat of protectant to prevent against rust.....
