Hi, I own a Protege 5, and was wondering if it's hard to tighten the fan belt, it squeeling on me, it may need to be replaced, but if not i was wondering if this is an easy procedure....thx folks!

Fan?... Do you mean the alternator or power steering/ac belt?

It isn't hard to tighten, you just need the proper wrenches.

yeah... we don't have a fan belt, what with the engine being transversely mounted and all.

You can tighten the accessory drive belts, as L8R said, fairly easily. I know the procedures' about this are in the P5 forum. Search, young caterpillar. Search.

first thing to do would be to find your fan belt...this will take most of your time as it doesnt exist...then use your fan belt tightening monkey wrench to solve the problem...as noted above we have belts to be tightened, but no fan belts.

lol last time i took the P5 to the dealer for one of their oil change specials the guy told me i needed my fan belt replaced... lol sure buddy, whatever you say...

lol, never said i was smart at this sort of stuff, so where would the squeelin be coming from?...any idea?...usually when I take off in the morning, it does it, or i find when the fan for the heat is on it will do it as well.

the accessory drive belts, as previously mentioned. IE power steering, alternator, water pump, A/C, etc

everyone is a smart ass :D . do this: ( I had the same problem )

pop the hood
run the car
turn the ac off and listen
turn the ac on and listen

if it makes noise from the ac, the adjustment can be done from the front near the power steering bottle and ac fan. it is 2 14mm that needs to be adjusted and tightened.

Do you need new belts?

let us know.

I was having a squealing. I had the alternator belt and the power steering belt replaced. l still have the squealing. Any ideas?
