my buddy works at a auto body shops and swears up and down that if he paints my rims with a high quality paint and clear coat that it will last and not flake or chip. says that powder coating does make the rim less sound. opinions anyone. he wants to color match the rims

Well, for starters, that's BS about powdercoating somehow weakening the wheel. I don't know who's ass he pulled that from.

But if you want to have them painted, then by all means go for it. Just make sure the prep work is done right. That includes stripping the wheels to the bare metal prior to painting.

LOL

I agree with the powder coating portion....

However, you're going to have your rims painted black? Why not get them, a bronze color or something? Just wonderin. If you don't like it, will your bud be willing to paint another color?

actually it is possible to weaken alloy wheels through the powdercoating process. its not the powdercoat itself, but the high heat baking cycle the wheels are put through. It can happen on some alloy wheels due to the heat. It all depends on the powdercoating process however.

There is a chemical dip which has been tested to be safe AFAIK...

also some of the powdercoating companies have lower temp. baking cycles to reduce any stress on alloy wheels.

also, dont powdercoat magnesium wheels - a high temp bake will cause the wheel to ignite and isnt easily (if @ all) extiguishable.

not really into the bronze look. i like the blacked out look myself. im going to coat the calipers red and my buddy is going to spray the tail lights for a tinted look. i guess they do it for some dealerships. they put some drops of black into the clear and coat them. he says he can garantee they wont fade or chip

RX-8 rims but you get the idea. Painted at a local body shop with no issues...

dude, you can paint them yourself for sure, Fleawannabe is right. just get some sand paper, duplicolor primer, duplicolor wheel paint and clear if you want. if you take your time and do it right it will last and it will look just as good as powder coating or professional painting for about $20.

Mine are due back from the PC'er on next tuesday. We'll see how they turn out. The spokes are done a gloss black and the rest of the wheel is a translucient red. I really hope they turn out good....

i spray painted the rims on an old honda civic that i had blue with out even cleaning them and they never chiped
