Thoughts on Alpine CDA 9853 vs CDA 9855?

Ok, I asked for the 9855 for Christmas, but dad approached me and said he was looking at the 9853 and leaning towards it a bit more. Anyone wanna elaborate on the differences?

Already went on there, read the tech specs, but I was hoping someone with a bit more tech know how than I could give me a break down if I really need it or not.

The 9855 has 4v pre-outs instead of 2v, more color options for the buttons, and a cooler display. Other than that I think they are identical.

What that means to you: Your amps will receive half the voltage from the pre-outs meaning you will have to turn up the gains a little bit more. You won't get a perfect match between the buttons and the stock dash lights but you can at least switch between green and red. Then there is the display...Personally I wouldn't pay the extra money for it but that's me.

Thanks, thats all I really needed to know. I wasn't sure what the different voltage output meant on the pre-outs, but I'm good now.

You got it, display and pre-amp voltage is the only difference between them.

Beware, buy online and get absoluely no alpine warrenty.

eclipse. come on audio guru.
hey sorry to threadjack but what's the best price you can do me for on one of these? most bestus better price possible:D

As someone who owns the 9853, I would strongly recomend neither. Unless there have been a lot of changes to the unit since I bought mine 5 months ago, you should look for something else. Dont get me wrong, I'm a huge alpine fan and the unit sounds great, but there are so many annoying little quirks and bugs its ridiculous. The main problem I have had is that the little slider menu thingy doesnt let me access all the menu options, and the ones I can access don't always work. Also, there is a consistant and annoying problem with the face plate not flipping down so that the CD can eject. You press the eject button, and it beeps, but it just sits there. It's a manufacturing defect inside the unit, because I check everytime it happenes and it is never snagged on anything externally.

Maybe the 9855 doesn't have these problems, but since they're almost identical I would guess they do. My recomendation would be either go with an Alpine from last year or a high end Pioneer or Eclipse unit.

Interesting, I wonder if they fixed any of the bugs you mention. It's good to hear from someone that actually has the HU I was looking at too, so I can get some first hand experiences. I doubt I order it online, but I can usually get some of the local audio shops to price match or come close to online prices.

If you can get a local store to price match it or come close so that you can have the alpine warranty, and hopefully an in store warranty, I'd say go for it. The 53 is a great head unit sound and control wise, and I've played with a friends 55 and it's even better as far as the menu interface goes. So yeah, go to a local store, tell them you're concerned about the aformentioned issues, and see what they can tell you.

Good luck in your search.

I am aware of the brand, but what are the chances that he would be?

On an eclipse, nothing, we don't sell them. On an alpine, I will have to see what the next unadvertised sale brings us to work with.

We ha the same problem in the store with one of the 53s not flipping out. The part about the menu bar, well, thats just the bad glide touch for you. I hate that crap and luckily alpine learned from their mistakes and they are killing off glide touch.

I would never give up a warrenty on a modern headunit, there is simply WAY to much crap packed into them that can go wrong. I have set to see a single model not have a failure within a year.

For the $200-$300 range, look at pioneer premier. They have more to offer then the alpines in this area which is really only one model, the 9851 which is a HUGE waste of money in my opinion. It doesn't really have dick over the 47 which is a sweet little deck. In this price range, got for the Pioneer DEHP670MP or 770MP. The 770 has a hoaky center control knob but I can't find fualt in the 670. I sell it alot and have had the least amount of issues with it.

There is a science to that.
Find the sales guy that looks like he used to get beat up alot in school. He will be more likely to bend on price than anyone else.

Ive learned from my last HU that the factory warranty is a must, and I won't sacrifice it for getting a better deal. My Kenwood's (shutter) ribbon cable died on me and it cost me almost 100 bucks out of pocket to get it fixed.

1sty, I've looked at a lot of HUs with DSP/Digital encoding. Is it worth the extra coin to get one with it, or is it just a waste of money?
