Hello,

the name's sean and I'm the mazda 6 board mod. I'm looking at relocating to the tacoma/seattle/bellvue area (I need to get out of pennsylvania, its awful) and I was wondering how the scene was out there. I'm an IT guy (sys admin) for a living and seattle seems like a pretty tech savvy city which is a good fit. Other than that, are there any decent mazda clubs out there? How's the car show scene, is it pretty active? Let me know, I'd appreciate any info!

thanks a lot

Sean

Hey Sean,
Yea Seattle is a IT boom town. I myself have been in IT for 6+ years and you should have no problem getting in with Microsoft, IBM, Compaq, Washington Mutual or any of several other big companies over here.
The car scene is alright... lol. We don't get together as much as maybe some of us would like to but we have some pretty die hard people in our group. Keep us updated here if you do decide to move over so we can have a meet and get you plugged in. Welcome.

Hey Kristin, you moving up as well or are ya just adding your two cents?

Yeah, Seattle is up and coming about car stuff. I've networked, found out about some crazy events that are scheduled to come to Seattle. Anyways, hope you do move up, and look forward to meeting you!

thanks for the info guys.

currently I'm a sys admin at a high school. I just graduated from college in may, so I'm having a bit of difficulty getting a job, but seattle looks like a good fit for me.. I don't mind the rain so much, but I hear when its sunny, its beautiful. I already applied at boeing in renton, and I'll hopefully be submitting my resume to some other big companies soon. If you guys have any leads it would be appreciated. I'll keep you all posted as to what happens, and hopefully I'll be joining you guys on the west coast very soon.

Move to vancuver. they've got Fujitsu down there. then you'd be nextdoor to corksport. Or move to olympia. we are just 15min. south of Intel and it's cheeper to live here than stillicom or dupont.

the rain is never really that bad... its worse in fl. Its not cheap to live there but i love seattle, id like to end up there one day.

Id try to get a job before you move. Hire a headhunter and just move where the job is at. IT is not that easy to get a job esp with less exp. best of luck to ya.

Western WA I dont like there are to many dumb laws and police that inforce them people are really uptight here (alot of the ones i meet) and the only thing that keeps me here is the scenery and weather and my wife likes it here. Yes, I like the climate that the weather produces. It great if you love outdoor activities.

Just because the cops in yelm write tickets for going 1mph over doesn't mean they are all like that.

I dont mean in Yelm, I mean in the bigger cities. like tacoma, fife, kent, federal way, renton. Actually where i live there are barley any cops at all. i never get pulled over here (Knock on wood).

theres pretty much too many cops everywhere, its just that in seattle they have better things to do then mess with people for minor traffic infringements, as in small towns thats how they make their money..

tacoma, IMO, is no good, just kinda dirty and sketchy..Bellevue is pretty nice, little ritsy, and seattle, well its one of the best places in the US

Good luck on your job search

I love Seattle personally. I wouldn't move anywhere else in the US unless there is really really impressive job offer. The only 2 things bad I can think of here is 1) housing is too expensive, and 2) I-405 is way too narrow, need more lanes for those fast-lane-blocking-soccer-moms' SUV/Minivans and road-bombing-gravel trucks.
Of course there will be a 3rd if they insist to carry on that monorail project.
Anyway, it really depends on what you like. If you like cooler climate and don't mind the rain, Seattle will be perfect for you.
But if you like warmer climate and don't like rainning that much, I would suggest you take a look at Dallas TX. Lots of jobs opening from Hi tech firms, cheap house, huge freeways, and the storm never gets that far in there.
I wouldn't move there myself though cause I hated the heat.

Yeah, I'm still in the phase of wanting to get in the car and drive back to Alabama, but even being here for a week, I can tell I'm gonna love it once I get over this homesick crap. It's definatly a awsome place, and you might want to check out Monster.com. Lots of IT jobs listed on there.

good luck with your move, and finding a job....
have you ever visited the area ? you might want to check it out before moving .... the car scene isnt bustling, but it's improving.... good people like corksport are near tho.... and planty of good shops, and unless you need an inspection.... you can get away with s*** here... (like straight pipes) everyone I know with a sports car has at least a gutted cat...

good luck and - peace !

look online to see what city is cheaper than the next, housing prices have doubled in the state in the last 3 years.... but rent remains about the same...
and once the ass falls out of the market, prices will fall.....

I respect your right to disagree, friend.....
but my moms house went from 86k in 2002 to 250k in 2005....
sounds like kinda an empty market....
and rent prices havent increased, neither have wages.... just how much they're willing to finance.... they'll finance someone in 2005 for 250k, but in 2001 they'd be lucky to get 100k ......

Peace.

I agree.
In the end, it is just the same group of "investors" doing the buying and selling, which basically just trading house among each other. Those who really need a house to live simply can't afford it.
Look at the market in Tokyo or Hong Kong and you will know what I mean.

I really do want to check the area out, but I don't have the time or dough to fly out there. I want to go to either the seattle metro area or the boulder co area. As you can see, the cooler climates don't bother me.. I was originally a new englander so weather doesn't bother me. I'd take a cool climate over the nasty disgusting humid summers we have here. Lil' fog never hurt anybody. But yeah, I've started hitting up monster and whatnot, I just have to find a job that will help me with relocation expenses.

The best cops in wa are olympia. they don't pull you over for speeds uner 5 over. They are frendly and fair. and they don't speed or tailgate. that is my biggest pet peeve. the cops have to abide by the same traffic laws as us. most olympia cops have been on the job for at least 4 years. they know what they are doing and they arn't tryuing to prove themselves. big dept have alot more young cops than smaller towns. I was in the explorers program with piece county in highschool. I met alot ove very good cops in the lakewood PD(used to be part of pierce county sheriff. piece and thurston counties have the largest meth lab problems in the state and officers in lake wood have it the worst. so if you get pulled over in a bad part of lakewood (pretty much everywhere) and get pulled out and detained don't risit or argue just let them do thier job. with the problems they see on a daily basis expect them to bee alittle anxious. I was there for two years and was in 2 shootouts, 4 carchases all with foot pursuits, and helped mke countless arrests.

My suggestion is move to smaller towns or suburbs and commute. If you want to be close to seatle check out the nicer parts of normandy park. stay clear of sea-tac, fife and the highline area. if you want tacoma stay away from hilltop, parts of parkland and spanaway, and anywhere along so. tacoma way.
