Thinking about buying an RX8... which one

:
86' RX-7 modded
Ok.. well I got this idea yesterday that I may put the RX7 on hold and go buy an RX8...

My question is..

R3/super touring/sport etc... what is the best one...

I want the Manual Trans, leather, would love it in white. and I guess I am wondering what is the difference in the packages as far as ammenities...

Also is there anything I should be looking for wether new or used in this rx8 of something to look for (yes I know alot about rotaries, not worried about the engine just misc rx8 prone stuff to look for)

let me know please..

Go to mazdausa for a good comparison between the four trim lines. We have the '06 Grand Touring and found that it is pretty nice.

As for something to look for, you might search for the service bulletins to see if anything stands out. We've only had one problem; and, that was a broken visor. It was listed in the bulletins. Of course, our car only has about 11K miles on it; so, it's not had the time to have too many problems. The newly extended warranty on the core engine parts sure helped to defray any concerns about that.

To be honest, we have a RX-8 because my wife wanted one. My pick would be a FD RX-7. I just sold our FC LT1 RX-7 so I could buy the LS6 Miata. I liked the FC; but, I love the styling of the FD. To me, the RX-8 is a family car, not a sports car. It has four doors and four seats, no matter how sporty it looks. She really likes it, though. That's what matters. (lol2)

unless you have a need for the four doors dont get an RX-8, I have an 04 grand touring, loaded everything, I am yet to have any issues...except for the aformentioned visor, which was fixed for free....on a side note, you cant really pull power easy. For the same price you can get a RX7 twin turbo, and with 3g you can run 11's all day long, in an RX8 to get to 11's you need about 12g.....plus its just that much sexier to have a TRUE 2 seat sports car.

thats just my 2 cents and opinion.
but if you must get an RX8, go with the R3, youll like the suspension, if you want creature comfort get the grand touring

To me, it must have no more than two seats to be a "TRUE" sports car. The RX-7 fits the bill for that and has the performance to go with it. The RX-8 can be no more than "sporty." With the four doors, that's stretching it. It's more of a family car with good styling. A two door car would be sporty, to me. As for the suspension, I guess the GT was just right for us. We're getting old and already have two other cars with stiff suspensions. For the long trips, the GT suspension is more appreciated. :D

I know I seem very picky about what is a sports car; but, I can't help that I grew up in an era when a sports car had two seats. How can anyone consider a four door family car a sports car, no matter what manufacturer produced it? If it has four doors, it's a family car. Some are just better styled than others. We still like the RX-8, despite its shortcomings. :D

i like the r3 personally. the only problem for now is that none of them come boosted. i am sure you could fix that though.

From the driver's seat the RX-8 feels like a sports car in ways even some two-seaters don't. And it certainly doesn't feel like a sedan. So for me it's a sports car.

It's not a good choice for those into acceleration times. But for handling, my personal priority, the RX-8 is hard to beat. And I find it plenty quick.

they are pretty darn slow. rx-8 will be embarrassed by most cars on the street. handling is great, but speed and accelleration are a large part of the equation too

The "Series-II" released from FEB-08 to JUN-08 (depending on the country) can seem a little boy-racer for some tastes. Not to mention more expensive

So the "Series-I" run-out specials otherwise known as the "40TH ANNIVERSARY" model has a few extra goodies over the regular series-I plus gets the Series-II wheels + foam filled front crossbar & Bilsteins etc.

A 40TH Anniversary model would be the best pick of the "Series-I" versions for my money.

ok I thank everyone for their posts... I am no longer looking into an RX8 at the moment.. I am going to spend all my time and money finishing up my FC.

I have driven an 8 I like the feel but yes they are SLOW.. IMO... I have no use for the back seats but its what u get when u buy an 8.

but yea as of now this thread can be toasted since I am no longer "looking"

My 8 is not slow. Is just not fast enough for some people. I mean look around you tube and you will find rx8 vs the Z and (im talking stock) most reviews pick the 8 over the Z. And the Z has more power.

The RX8 has 70 HP over the the best of the N.A. RX7's (FC) and is only 15 HP less than a stock FD. There are other companies than make faster cars, but isn't that always the case?

hp or weight to power...

yes the 8 has more hp but an S5 n/a I bet could keep up quite nice with an RX8 atleast for a little while..

I know a turbo 7 vs an rx8 is no dice the 8 will be seeing tails by 2nd gear.

to me as a turbo fc driver the rx8 is slow. its not nessecarliy "slow", I would say it is quick but not fast.

ok spool but when is comparing a n/a to a turbo car fair? N/A to N/A rx8 ftw lol.

lol no I said if u compare a non turbo S5 fc against an rx8 it would be a decent run..

but a stock turbo fc compared to a stock rx8 (which have close the same hp) the turbo car would pull all day.

I think the "Series-5" (89-91) GTU-II is the quickest of the Atmo RX-7's.....??

Only sold in the USA though

Lots of good points already out there, for me it was a seat of the pants decision. Hard to describe any other way. I drove a bunch of cars (350, s2k, evo, sti, even an eclipse) and I think they are all quicker than the 8, but I came away from my test drive with my decision made. There was something about the 8 that just hooked me. It is hard to put my finger on what that "thing" is with this car, but I just knew I wanted an 8 reguardless of what the stats said.

I guess what I am saying is drive one and you will know if it is right for you or not. If you get out and think to your self "I think it should be faster", then look around and you will find plenty of cars that are faster. BTW I had a P5 and loved that car too. The extra seats/doors in the 8 come in handy with the kids which is nice for me at least. I even bring one or both of my daughters to car meets with me from time to time. Hope this helps. To be honest I would look for a good low mileage used 06 or 07, there are some great deals out there.
