thepope540's KLDE swap / build thread

Its an Eaton M62 - found in some JR kits, but also on loads of GM 3.8 V6 cars from the 90's. I'm going to find one on ebay or in a junkyard to rebuild and then rework my intake manifold so it can bolt right on. It will be a throttle response beast. I've driven a miata with a SC on the manifold and the throttle response feels like ITBs :) Plus with it on the manifold it will be out of the way if I ever decide to twin charge the beast (nana)

you can buy my old GTP from 01, if my memory serves me thats an m90 though.
needs a tranny, not like you care about that

M90 is too big for my little 2.5, unless the price is VERY right, if it is I could make it work...

if i recall i have a 3.4" pulley on it right now which memory serving is good for about 10lb boost. im really looking to keep it with the car though, so if you want a S/C and a N/A grand prix (GTP-> GT swap haha) it might be right up your alley. hell, figure out how to swap the 3.8 in there, now that would be a protege.

would you be interested in the whole car or really just the S/C?

what did you need to get in order to run megasquirt. if anything

I bought a wideband and thats about it. The MS unit I'm going to be using was built by a member on probetalk specifically for the KLDE with boost so it isn't requiring any mods or work to make it function. Plus it was a BARGAIN. probetalk.com FTW

i just got mine in the mail yesterday. just need to put it together. i bought it unassemblied starting that after work today to be honest im a little scared shitless. i keep wondering if i forgot something i bought a tune cable, antistatic wrist strap, lead bender,ms230-k (ms2 programmable ems), mk-bip373 (for waste spark, not sure if im using it yet), mk-relayctrl (controlling fans), mk-pwmiac (for idle speed control). if theres anything you can think of that i might have forgotten please let me know

i actually have no clue what im doin but i thought it would be a great learning experiance. U might be thinking im cheap and i am but thats not part of it im spending enough money so why not assemblied. I basically want to try and build it myself. Im in my 3rd electrical class in school and still lost. We will see how it turns out

I was really looking forward to build my MS, but I found the perfect unit assembled for less than the cost of the parts.

Bullshark - Did you get a stimulator? You may want one so you can test your work as you go.

I only got a chance to look at it after dinner last night and it looks hard.

Not yet i wanted to wait for my paycheck to fill the void left by the ms. I think i might wait til i have spring break to start it in a week so it could be a bit smoother

Any advantages to microsquirt? Smaller unit but divorced map sensor and different ignition.
I will totally go for an assembled unit on the Smd board. Canada isn't blessed with readily available parts or reasonable shipping.

There really isn't any reason to go with microsquirt, plus it doesn't have as many options. Go with the SMD v3.57 Megasquirt II setup that DIYautotune sells. Its on'y a few dollars more than a standard assembled MSII and it would be theoretically more reliable.

A v6 lives under my hood! My buddy and I pulled the motor from the mx6 and got it installed in the msp in under 6 hours. There is still a ton of work to do (AC, power steering, and electrical) but all the mechanical is done! :) I took a couple cell phone pics and I'll try to get 'em posted later.

6 hours sounds very impressive. nice job
i started assemly on my ms 2 days ago progress is slow but it is still progress. i should be getting the stimulator for it today. lets hope for the best

If you plan on doing this swap don't use the KLDE distributor setup, its unfriendly to wire and I'm told not that reliable. What you want to do is get the Ford EDIS-6 complete ignition system. It is far simpler to wire and use, plus megasquirt loves it. The entire system can be bought from Boost Engineering for under $100 - coils, wires, pigtails, and the EDIS box itself.

3/11/10 I ended up buying a steal of an MS I unit and MS I doesn't like the EDIS system. I may keep the EDIS setup around because I still feel that it is the way to go, but for me to use it I would have to get a whole new megasquirt.

does the ms2 like the EDIS setup???

As a rule of thumb all MS likes EDIS although its definitely not necessary, and the EDIS control module can be used or left out depending on you MS setup.
