Im no techie, as everyone on this board pretty much knows by now, but here is my setup (as far as garage to work in):

3 dollars per hour
full drive-up lift bay (can raise car about 7 feet - drive on, not by frame)
any possible tool available to do anything to any car
hjydrolic support thingys (things that hold up transmissions, etc)

how hard would it be to install my own clutch and flywheel with all that available to me?

Razor, the on post garages rock bro. :D They guys there are all old school mechs, and will help ya if need be. :D You also got the manual, so you should not have any issues, Just make sure they got a tranny jack, which they should. :D

EDIT: To answer you question, it should not be hard at all. I did my clutch and f/w on my honda at an onpost garage. :D

they do, didnt you see my technical term for it?

"hjydrolic support thingys"

Yea, ok so it will be easy for me to get to, but i guess i also dont quite understand exactly where both is...also is it just take the one off, line up the new one, and bolt in, or is it more complicated than that? i was just wondering why everyone seemed to take theirs in to get done, like the biggest challenge was getting to them

Your splitting the tranny from the engine, Its more time consuming then anything. As long as you got the alignment tool, and basic mechanical skills, you can do it nikki. :D

EDIT: AND START ADDRESSING ME AS YES SSG :D j/k Please call me Craig bro. :D

If you have another dude to help you (preferably someone that has removed a gearbox and clutch) it will be no problem at all with all of that...

Assuming the shop you are working at has some air tools it will go even faster...

I have not done it on a P5, but a friend and I changed the clutch on a Mk III Jetta 8v last spring, took a full day (at least 9 full hours)...but neither one of us had ever done the work and all we had were basic tools, a garage with a small grease pit, and a Bently Manual...

At the very least you will need a Haynes manual...I would reccomend the Mazda shop manual but that thing is pretty expensive...The Haynes manual over all is a piece of s***, and you will need to get one for a 93-97MX-6, Probe, 93-98 626 becuase they don't make it for a P5 yet...Transaxle and clutch is the same in those and our cars, so the pictures and procedures are almost identical...but for the work you are doing the info given is enough to go by + it is only about $15 at Pep Boys...at least go and look over the manual so you know what you are getting into, lots of annoying tedious work, but for the most part it is straight forward...

Razor, I did it myself and it took 8 hours at the hobby shop on base. I used the large jack stands opposed to using a lift, the lift gets in the way, and is too high anyway. Just needs to be high enough to get the tranny jack under the tranny and able to pull it out from underneath the car. At 3 dollors an hour, sounds like that is where you are doing the work. Gotta love Base Services.

yep thats where im doing it...install, i have all the nifty tools, and a free protege shop manual :)

craig, people will be calling me SGT shortly. finally.

so once it gets seperated its real obvious what to do, like duh take off this and that connection and just replace it with the new s***?

Yeah, once you get them seperated, unbolt the clutch from the flywheel, unbolt the flywheel, remove the pilot bearing, install new pilot bearing, bolt up new flywheel or resurfaced flywheel, stick the alignment tool thru the clutch disk and stick that into the pilot bearing, then line the pressure plate up and bolt it to the flywheel, then remove the alignment tool. On the tranny, replace the throw out bearing, put the tranny back in. Hardest part is lining up the output shaft thru the clutch disk and into the pilot bearing, but it not too bad.

some come with, just make sure when you buy the combo. It may also come with the pilot bearing. What combo are you getting.

to be honest, im just thinking ahead...that is prolly gonna be my next mod (unless i get pulleys) after my DGM dash kit...so im kinda just probing the waters ahead of time rather than ******* s*** up and then rushing home in my friends car while mine is torn apart posting an "URGENT" type thread...i will prolly go with the lightweight flywheel from mitch, as far as the clutch, i have no idea...i just figured id might as well get a new one while im replacing the flywheel especially since i tend to ride the clutch, i could get a pretty sturdy one.

I would recommend a clutch/flywheel combo from here. You can't beat the price, $530 for Stage 1 and $565 for stage 2R, and that includes the flywheel.

thanks alot, whats the difference and how much does the flywheel weigh, i dont see it or im blind

corcksport.com has the clutch combos that have everything and I think they have a package where u can get the clutch setup including pressure plate and a flywheel in one package so it may be cheaper that way.

From what I have heard ACT and clutchmasters stage 2 or 3 clutches are the best. If you are going with big numbers eventually u may want the ACT 6puck one, problem with puck clutches i u need to make sure they have a spring incorporated into them, or it is too harsh.

let us know what u end up getting.

BTW I saw a 9lb fidanza flywheel for like 286 somewhere, best price I have seen yet for a 9lb, although I hear the indigo 8lb ones are really nice also.

Assuming you don't put it upside down like you did with your short shifter, you should be A-ok. ;)

Once you have it all apart. . .how about throwing a LSD in? How hard is that?

I have the ACT combo from corksport, it was like $340 for clutch, pressure plate, bearings, and alignment tool.

Although I'm not saying clutchmasters is bad, I thought that they went out of business. . .didn't they?

You have to tear the tranny apart for a LSD, it goes inside the tranny. This is the second thread today that someone said clutchmasters went out of bussiness. They just released new clutches last month including the EVO VIII.
