The Young MP5

I fell in love with the P5 from the first moment I saw one. There are quite a few cosmetic things I am not crazy about concerning the new 3. The 3 is adopting the "edgy" design of the Matrix which I don't care for. The rear fender edges of the car are to edgy for me. However, I may just have to get used to edgy cars since that is all that is in development lately.

same feeling:D

After shamelessly jacking CruzinAltitude's thread regarding the new MZ3's, I am posing the same question here:

Being new here & to Mazda, just curious: Did everyone feel the same way (that is, negatively) about the MP5 when it first came out as they do about the MZ3 hatch? Some cars have to grow on people and, while the MP5 is a somewhat unique auto, I just can't imagine that Mazda fans had similar reactions to the '5.

Anyone remember back to its debutante days?

The first time I saw one it was like watching T3...A great movie. but just not as good as T2.

I don't know what it is but it is not the car the P5 is...

When I first saw the small pics with the "coming in the near future" blurb in the car magazines, I thought that might just be the next car for us - a cool looking and useful 5-door hatch. Then eventually I saw a yellow one in person and thought it was a bit over the top and wasn't quite too sure. Then after some time and seeing a few more, it really grew on me, and when it was time to get a new car, the P5 was the only car we looked at.

I first saw a Protege5 was at the 2001 San Francisco Auto Show. Since I'm not a very tall guy, I always check out cars that fits me well. Among all the compact cars that were in the show, the Protege5 catched my attention right away. Very cool exterior design... fits great in there... have everything exactly what I wanted. But as a poor college student, there is no way I can afford such car or any cars as a matter.

After graduation this May, my job as an engineer allows me the luxury of buying my first brand new car. I went on car-searching.... test drove so many cars (Matrix, Civic Si, Subaru WRX etc... ) that my gf refused to go anymore test drives with me. I was tempted by the superb power of the Si and WRX but the price were exactly what I would allow myself to get a loan for. At one point, I was actually so tempted to get the Si that I check out all dealers in the radius of 100 miles for the right combo that I want.

My gf (obviously fustrated by my indecisiveness) gave me the ultimatum that I get a car that weekend or else. I was almost set to get the Si but one thought came into my mind at 2 a.m in the morning..... what is the car that I really wanted in the first place that I would not regret getting it in the future??

The answer is simple..... Protege5.

The main reason I bought mine was because I thought it looked tits and was a good price at the time.

omg i think i just crapped my pants lol

i think what you guys are going for is beautiful simplicity regarding the p5

Hey, glad someone (Scott42) caught that quote! lol But this was a case of it actually working out for me for once. I was digging on the P5 for some time, but couldn't justify trading in a car i was still paying for because i "wanted" it. But when the space became a necessity, and it was under the pretense that the wife would drive it, I knew i had to talk her into it. So now she has her Windstar, and I've got what i wanted from "jump"!

By the way, Scott, where are you from in Pa.? (cheers)

I liked the exterior design elements of the P5 right from the get go,...other than the direct on rear view this car has IMO gorgeous lines,...like the RX7's Mazda really knocked this one outta the park. Destinctive yet way practical,...and oh ya, sporty/affordable.
Not so sure of the new 3's design though, has'nt even started to grow on me.
Personally I think a Mazda 6 with the P5's "hatchback" style roofline would be the car to build/own/buy.
