Theoretically speaking, the rotary engine is a genius design. The most efficienct things in the world, be it the biological protein 'machines'/'pumps' in eukaryotic organisms, the load-bearing arch under bridges, the circular motion of a pitcher's arm, or an automobile engine-- all operate in circles. Circles are even the most thermodynamically favored conformation of molecules (spheres). Circles are universal. Rotational motion is worlds more efficient and powerful than linear motion. It's a wonder (and a shame) why automobile engineers have not looked into it more.

I forgot to add, rotational motion is worlds more efficient than linear motion. Linear motion has 180 degree directional change/oscillation is involved-- extremely inefficient.

what are the downfalls of the newer style RENESIS engine? do they still consume alot of oil? i don't know much about rotary engines. my friend had an RX7 TT and it always had problems.

I am quite positeve the Renesis still consumes pil. Oil is injected into each rotor housing during each cycle...

yes the renesis still burns oil, the oil metering pump is just alot more effecient adding to less oil being burnt. But ass any RX8 owner, they still have to add oil

well, the RENESIS is the most powerful NA rotary engine ever sold by Mazda, and also the cleanest burning rotary ever, thanks to successful implementation of the side intake AND exhaust ports. It is also the highest-revving production rotary engine ever, thanks to much lighter and stronger rotors. Plus all sorts of minor yet very important updates to the rotary design, there is a reason why it won 2004 International Engine of the Year award, Mazda, all by itself, did a really good job bringing the next-gen rotary engine to the market.

there's really nothing 'wrong' with the RENESIS compared to previous gen rotaries, it's just that in the end, it's still a rotary, with all its quirks that typical piston-engine owners aren't familiar with...

thanks, that is cool. i drove one at MazdaFest last year. i like the sound alot.

In my friend's RX7, he carried a jug of oil behind the passenger seat at all times.
