NYS law dictates -

The engine and power mechanism of every motor vehicle shall be so equipped and adjusted as to prevent the escape of excessive fumes and smoke.
Altering, changing, tampering with or "souping up" a motor vehicle for the purpose of racing or speeding on any public road, street or highway in this State shall be considered as aiding, abetting or assisting for the purposes of Sections 56-5-1590 to 56-5-1620.

As a fellow gearhead & former New Yorker,I can tell you you're facing a tough audience in the Police. NY's muffler law is subjective as I recall, meaning if the officer "thinks" it's too loud, it is.
Now - I'm thinking of getting a Corksport CBE, I have a racepipe, I refuse to get a downpipe because of how much louder it makes the car. I don't want the extra attention. Is the CNT quieter? Is the Magnaflow quieter? I simply don't want the attention. Now, if the Corksport is mildly louder, which I think it is, than stock. Sign me up. My Probe has a Borla which is about as loud as I'd ever want an exhaust to be. Little louder than stock on my MS3. Help me out here. I'm getting something. I just don't want it to be obsenely loud.
