The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

You wish you were cool enough to be a musician/race car driver elitist. :P

Ok, quick question. If I even made the drive to Lakewood Menchies, would there be more than 2 people coming? And what time?

Lauri said she'd give big daddy his fix, if you go then I'll come. Guess around 8? Bill is dropping off the tires at my place, so I'll be free after that

Any other cleveland folk going?I guess Im in cause i need to get out of the house tonight and the wife went shopping with her mom

are lakewood cops dicks? I don't need pulled over for my exhaust (corksport with gutted cat on a 13B is LOUD)

Verts need rollbars. They don't check thicknesses or anything, just that you have one.

Sounds like the ol' "broomstick" test. So no additional rear supports needed? Looks like you have a hardog or something... I ordered a really nice bar from goodwin racing last week only to find out SCCA wont let me run track days with it... I super bummed cuz there's a REALLY sweet driving school coming up at MidOhio Speedway--which I hear is a superfly track

I have a gopro vid on YouTube of the miata in car.... Let me find it so you can at least see the track surface.

Good call; thanks!

What requirements aren't met by the bars Goodwin carries? I'm just curious.

According to SCCA personnel:

All roll bars must be braced in a manner to prevent movement in a fore-and-aft direction with the brace attached within the top one-third of the roll hoop, and at an angle of at least thirty degrees from vertical. It is strongly recommended that two such braces be used, parallel to the sides of the car, and placed at the outer extremities of the roll bar hoop. Such braces should extend to the rear whenever possible.

As described, Ben’s roll bar does not comply. We have been researching this for some time and have yet to find a roll bar for a Mazda MX-5 that is compliant. We suggest that Ben get a factory hard top.
:("

So naturally, I wrote back a lengthy email explaining how GoodWin cars compete all the time with these bars. I even included very detailed installation pictures of three different options that GoodWin claimed were perfectly suited to track use (Quick Change, Double Hoop w/Quick change (which has additional weld in plates), and as a last resort, the Petty Bar option (which requires cutting up your carpet).

Response was something about "pursuant to code blah blah blah" the weld plates shown only had 2 bolts instead of 3 and that the SCCA actually prefers to see a sandwhiched plate design with 3 bolts... which for all practical purposes is impossible without removing gas tank, whole rear end, etc...

They pretty much just told me to forget it and get a hardtop (mega $$$ and pretty effin rare to find used)

And here's one of my videos from Nelson :D

WoW! That track indeed looks quite torched... Esp in the turns, which obviously is where you'd want the smoothest pavement. Why in the world wouldnt they just resurface the turns ???

Tripn, I've bought hard dog hardcore bars for the miatas. Those seem like they would meet their standards. 3 bolts in each support, and a sandwich plate on the back. You need to cut slots in your rear parcel shelf to install the rearward legs. I'm not sure about the angle but I do think on the website they tell you what standards they meet... Or however you say that. I'm not well versed in autox and race speak. I just like driving fast lol.

And as far as paving it, I find it hard to believe they don't have the money but who knows.

There are plenty of cars in autoX without a roll cage and these guys run at nationals. I'm pretty sure you need one when racing against others in clubracing, but not during a solo event.

I can understand not allowing those Goodwin bars, except possibly the petty bar version. There is not sufficent support to keep the bar from bending forward or backward in the event of a roll-over. The rules are there to protect you. The harddog bars are popular and are allowed because they have sufficient support and attachments. The thing I have a hard time understanding is why a hard top alone would be allowed. That's just a fiberglass shell that won't do anything in a crash either.

No roll bar required for autocross because there is not really a risk of roll-over unless you are in a VW rabbit, focus, e-30 or one of those tip happy cars. On a track cars get tripped by the grass, gravel traps, or even other cars. And Nelson "tire walls" that seem to be specifically designed for launching cars into the air. By far the worst track I've ever been on. I was there once and have no desire to go back. Maybe if they paved it.

There are some crazy videos of cars being launch over the walls on youtube @ Nelson.
