The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

LOL, I liked your Facebook quote better, Josh.

Merry almost Christmas my Mazda family!!!

Haha...well, you have another 21 hours to get A Christmas Story in. We watched it on DVD this morning, and I'm sure another 4 times combined tomorrow over the course of the day.

I've been thinking about a new direction in life too, I don't think my Air Traffic Controller plan is going to happen. Or at least, I'm tired of being in limbo waiting for it TO happen. I need a backup plan, 'cause I HATE working on cars for a living, and having to put up with a few more years of this would devastate me. (that's how long it's looking like it's going to take for ATC to pan out)

Josh, what's the hold up with the ATC? are they not hiring now? we have a friend (former mazda owner, of course) who is an ATC and works at the Oberlin complex. Want me to contact him and see what's up? maybe get you an in or at least a contact and some info?

and now it IS officially Christmas ~ and since i slept most of Christmas Eve evening, i am WIDE AWAKE now : / Merry Christmas to all friends near and far, it's been a pleasure hanging with the old friends and a great time getting to know the new ones ...

My mother is about to retire from there. :)

The deal is, once you're qualified to BE hired, either through FAA approved colleges like the one I went to (there's only 31 in the country) or if you controlled in the Military, you fill out the application and then go into a pool of other qualified applicants. They only hire people twice a year, because they can only shuffle so many people through the training academy in OKC at a time, and every controller must go through there. So the rest of time time, you're waiting around with a thumb up your ass!

The hold up with me is, this Air Traffic Selection And Training test/AT-SAT everyone must pass in order to be hired. They split it up into Qualified (70%-84.9%) and Well Qualified (85%-100%), and I'm in the Q range, with a 83.8%. They don't look at the percentages though, just a Q and WQ. This test is supposed to measure your ability to be able to perform the job, so they generally pick people who scored the highest on the test.

Everyone hates this method of selection though, because sitting down and cracking off a high score on some computerized test in 6 hours, doesn't mean you're going to be a hard worker and put in the time and effort to learn and perform the job WELL for the next 25 years, just that you're capable of doing it. Where as you have me, who; spent the money to actually LEARN the career, got a pilot's license so I could better understand the pilot's perspective (requirement of my school) maintained a 4.0 GPA while in school, worked FOR the school as a Teacher's Assistant teaching the semester behind me, all on the SAME simulators, the SAME airspace map, and most of the SAME problems they use at the Academy in OKC. My school ALSO trained us on both the Radar and Radar Associate positions, where at OKC they only train on the Radar Associate position. (those are just as they sound, Radar guy works the traffic and talks to pilots, his Associate helps him with behind the scenes stuff)

So, I've essentially BEEN through the Academy already, AND passed with flying colors, but because I'm not some loser who sits at home playing video games my whole life (those people get the highest scores, because the test is basically games on a computer screen) I've been getting passed over for 2 1/2 years because in their eyes, I'm only Q and not WQ to do the job.

*sigh* /end rant.

Merry X-Mas to everyone! lol

ugh. i can dig it josh. a while back i think my friend said they were practically hiring people off the street with no training whatsoever. if it's government regulated, i'm sure it's all f'ed up. well, i'll keep my fingers crossed for you that some day your ship will come in ...

Yea, people were getting in OTS for a while, which REALLY pissed me off. Here I am, $30,000 in the hole for this degree, and some asshole with NO previous aviation experience gets a job only because he did well on some aptitude test?? Ridiculous. It's a pretty significant job...I mean, Lawyers don't get to be Lawyers just by taking some random test. Well, they test (bar exam) but they also put in years worth of work to get to that point. Same with Doctors....you wouldn't want a Doctor opening you up after learning he just passed a test and didn't have any medical experience! Hell, Doctors might treat tens of thousands of people in a CAREER, Controllers have the lives of tens of thousands of people in their hands in ONE SHIFT! lol

Some OTS make it though, but a good amount wash out because again, the test only means you're capable of doing the job, it doesn't PROVE that you CAN do the job, like I feel my degree has.

-btw- What's your friends' name? He and my mom probably know eachother.

We hope everyone had a great Christmas. I know ours was good. We had our families over at our house for food and gifts. Then we played cards, good times.

Nothing too fancy this year. Now that I'm all grown up (age wise, not maturity wise), I prefer not to have my mom get me anything crazy. She is buying me the compact 1.5 ton alumnium racing jack from harbor freight. I gotta get back to Akron and check if the coupon I have is still good for it being 60 bucks but if not, it's 80.

Cara's parents got me some jumper cables and a gift card to Autozone. Cara and I decided not to do presents this year.

I had a great time with the family and fiancee though and I hope all of you had great times too.
