The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

Comparing apples to apples, a FWD car should drive better in the snow than a RWD. The Miata has all season tires, but so did the Focus that was replaced by it. That Focus wouldn't have flinched in this snow, but the Miata was struggling to move. If the Miata had snow tires and extra weight in the rear I'm sure it would have been just fine as well. FWD just has the advantage of having most of its weight on the drive wheels which helps with traction in the snow.
Thanks I know Jess doesn't have an issue but I don't exactly live in the most populated area so it doesn't get plowed often.
Really? Now your wheel ADD has transfered into car ADD?

Haha no.... I am selling my neon and buying something that will be more fun than the ms3 to dd and track and autox and fun run. Wait?

The MS3 and Miata are both fun. So what are your plans for the MS3 once you get a Miata? I would say MS3 is better for DD and possibly for track days (I guess that's more personal preference). Miata would be more fun for autocross and fun runs.

That thing also probably has more weight over the rear axle than my entire Miata.

I wish it was a diesel or atleast had eco-boost, The gutless wonder is powered by a drive by wire 5.4 V8. Weight, i'm not too sure about. I think it was between 13,000 to 15,000lbs, lol

Got some Firestone TransForce A/T's on there in the fall & I haven't had any issues with it. I can't even get it to slide sideways when it's snowing out like this. Not that i would really want to as that's a lot of weight to be throwing around, but I'll take drive ability over 'fun driving' any day.

yea i dunno why you would want to DD a rwd convertible in the winter when you have a fwd wagon you could use

Honestly atm I am not sure. The plan was to just push the power as far as I can. But I keep talking to Will and he is putting other thoughts in my head.
-Parting out to a few bolt ons and dd'ing it and keep the miata for fun
-Parting out and sell the car completely and buy a truck to dd and tow miata to events
-keep building the ms3 and dd the miata
-idk haha

It's amazing how much better FWD is in the snow. The Miata barely made it up my unplowed road. I had the revs around 2500-3000 in first gear and the car was moving less than a foot per second. I was hoping that I wouldn't get stuck in the middle of the road.

If you willingly buy a miata to drive in this weather, then you should willingly buy snow tires and put weight in the trunk. Otherwise you are an accident waiting to happen, provided you don't get stuck somehwere. I had ZERO issues with mine on half used blizzaks I got from Fez, and have had ZERO issues with the F-150 with all season tires. Hell, I just made it up a hill on Granger between Canal and Transportation on the left lane (not a clear path) while other cars were doing 15 on the right (and clear) side.

While you don't have to take these precautions with a FWD car, for me, RWD cars have been easier to handle in the Cleveland snow. Mind you, the MSM and the F-150 have no electronic aids...

IMHO, you're just asking for trouble.

Damn Will, and his logical thinking...

I know right? I see lots of fail in the future of the ms3 thats what has me worried. I have been thinking it for a while. Ever since I got tuned and really learned about the speeds I have been getting more and more discouraged. And the damn thing is expensive. I was looking at parts today for the miata and its $40 for front rotors.... forty dollars for both. Not to mention tires. Also since I am a cheap skate I could part out and make money

Fiat w/ bike rack looks good.

I leave all elctronic nannies on the Escape and have yet to have a problem. Of course it being an auto and a suv I'm not really compelled to also have fun while driving.

My commute was fine, except for the guy that wanted to yell at me at a stop light for "comming up on him too fast" I yelled back if he's too scared to go above 15mph on a basically cleared road he needs to get the **** off the road because he's endangering everybody else. Also honked at 2 other people.

And Patrick, since you seem dead set on getting a miata this is my vote:

-Parting out to a few bolt ons and dd'ing it and keep the miata for fun

Once you realize how much RWD>FWD you can start saving up for a nice truck & trailer. Of course you could keep the neon as your dd and sell the MS3...

I'd say just go with 1 or 3. Option 2 just doesn't feel right. Keep the Miata road legal and just drive it to events.

I don't really feel like an accident waiting to happen. A possibility of getting stuck somewhere, but that hasn't happened. Any car can get stuck. Once I get moving its fine and its easy to control. Not buying snow tires because I plan on buying a winter car for next winter and I only take slow side roads to work about 3 miles.

the neon will be gone I just don't even like getting into it anymore. It served its purpose for the time and I don't want it anymore. I am leaning to sell off the ms3 completely and then buy a dd (most likely a truck) and have the miata. or hell drive the miata all the time ZFG! idk I have some stuff to think about and numbers to run but I have been thinking about ditching the ms3 for a while as I am never satisfied and always worried as to when it will eventually pop I know it will.

With that kind of negative thinking it will. Why the rush to sell everything and then buy everything?

Why not sell neon and bolt-ons from MS3, take your time to find the right miata? unless you have one lined up already
