The Exhaust kicks A$$

Got the exhaust put on today and it's awesome!!! It's a one piece system -3 inch mandrell bent piping welded to my 3 inch HKS Hi-Power muffler. The piping starts right after my Primary cat and bypasses my second one.

One note: The system has no resonator. Believe it or not but we tested it with both and the resonator made it sound crappier. Without -it sounds very low and clean.

I'm sure once I bypass the first cat the sound will change and then a resonator might be needed.

I'll have pics of it up this weekend! It actually is mounted a little different then Terry's. It's kind of at an angle.

Sounds sweet. Exactly what I want to do when and if I ever get my MSP. Where did you get the mandrel bend piping? Is it stainless or aluminum? I don't want to throw any cels, will it do that if you bypass the cat and the resonator?

It's alluminum pipe but looks stainless almost (don't ask me how that works). I got it done at a place called Prodyno out here in AZ. Very cool place.

I'm guessing you will throw a cell if you bypass the primary Cat, but I didn't get one when I bypassed the 2nd Cat AND resonator.

Of course, now that I have a P5 ECU in my car I am constantly throwing a cel.. hehe. I'm getting used to it- brightens up the dash a bit.

How much did it cost you? Wondering if I could do mailorder for some pipe to fit my MSP? Stupid ?, why do you have a P5 ecu in your MP3? It gives better performance than the MP3 ecu?

I have the P5 ECU because it has retarted timing -which is much much better for turbo cars. The MP3 ECU had advanced timing and was causing some ping. I'm guessing the MSP will be a different ECU then both, but will definitely not have the advanced timing of the MP3.

I don't think Prodyno would do the piping mailorder. They would need your car there to fit and weld. Cool thought though. I'm sure there's someone out in your neck-of-the-woods that does the same thing. It's fairly common.

It's aluminized piping, which is non-stainless steel with a anti-rust coating(or aluminum coating). Aluminum pipe would not be able to withstand the temps of exhaust...

The Mazdaspeed protege has a completely different program than both the Protege and MP3 ECUs...The MSP actually likes the turbo and can deal with it rather effectively, as seen because they made 2000 versions of the car.

I don't know how it would work with the FM Protege turbo kit. Neither does FM. But you would want to get rid of the AFPR and run the larger injectors from the MSP as a start.

I agree, but you must not go over 10-15% bigger injector size than stock otherwise if you put some bigger injectors like lets say 550cc's one will really have idle and driveability problems

That's why I say, if you get the ones that the MSP runs, you'll be fine.

I thought the MSP ones are the same size as stock? Do you know if they are bigger Stutters? If they are bigger like 310cc or something then MSP guys can even go bigger like 340cc's

It may still be necessary to run some sort of extra fuel. The MSP has a smaller turbo than the FM kit and makes less power - thus, it's not as thirsty for fuel. Until we get the chance to play with it, it's hard to say how it would cope. Someone buy us an MSP, please!

I wouldn't recommend putting bigger injectors on a stock ECU unless you've got other pieces in there. As Terry said, you'd sacrifice idle and driveability.

I saw a book that was detailing items for the parts guys at Mazda dealers that got the "Mazdaspeed" status. It listed all the difference over a standard Protege. For the fuel system it said that they are running larger injectors than stock. The fuel pump is the same.

I'm not sure what size, I forgot. But 310 sounds right.

No they wouldn't notice at all. Until they melt something on the next test drive. "Man, this sure pings alot for a new car..."

Would it be possible to dump the MSPs ECU to a computer and reflash the P5s, MP3s ECUs with it? I mean, I guess anything is possible. But is it something worth considering?

It is possible. But not locally. We'd need to have the ECU for a few days.
