Technical question for the Mazda3 Gurus...

! own a 2012 Mazda 2 manual and my wife owns a 2011 mazda 3 Auto, two days ago while i was driving her car , for some stupid reason I decided to shift from D to P, the car made an awful noise , immediately I parked the car, i though everything was over. turned the car off, waited two minutes, turned the car back up, ... like nothing totally normal , no noise,.. obviously something got damage...but no evidence. I have no experience with Auto transmissions, what should I expect or do?
