teaching manual on a new 5

I learned in my first car in my parents inclined driveway without even getting on the street. Okay maybe my back wheels a couple times. Learning to balance with the clutch, shifting is the easy part. I stalled at my 1st stop light once I got on the street and had it down after that.

very good logic, chuyler1. We're both skiers so that was a good example to use, too ;)

...and yeah, I've been trying to think of a parking lot in the area that has a hill on it. I'm sure there's gotta be one somewhere. Both our parents have a hill driveway, but either not steep or long enough to make practicing on it worthwhile.

i still remember the first MT car (01 LX 2.0 ) she learned to drive . I told her "woman, i cant afford an AT car ,LOL, so you WILL learn to drive it." That was fun, Biggest problem she had was one time couldnt find 1st, had it in 3rd and was stalling like a motha. Needless to say we didnt make the green light.
She loved the upgrade to the MSP but chooses to drive the AT ford P/U instead. Good luck with the instruction.

Jandree - hate to admit it, but I learned to drive stick on my 5. Took me about 10 minutes to feel confident enough to drive it around the neighborhood.

It's damn easy, the short shifting makes it a breeze. :)

Oh, yeah... forgot to update this thread post-delivery :p

YES! She was very eager to drive it so we stopped in a parking lot on the way home from the dealership... only about 15 miles on the odometer, aah! Thankfully though, no grinding or stalling, and she was able to pull out in first on the first try. Later she also made an upshift to second. I was pretty impressed :)

Awesome :) - she's going to have the hang of it in no time and you are going to be over here lamenting how you never get to drive it anymore ;)

my wife bought her first NEW car and it was a 5-speed. i test drove and and had to drive it of the lot. we spend a coulpe hours driving that night and now she wants nothing but stick........she wanted the 5-speed back then (01) becasue she was super broke, needed a car, and did not want to spend the 1K+ for the auto......

it was a Sentra (easy car to learn on), proably like the 5.

good luck!

We picked up our Mazda5 last night. Both me and my wife had 5-speeds once and getting back into one is great.

The Mazda5 is near impossible to stall (for me at least). Takes very little gas to git 'er goin. Only wish the gas pedal had more feedback - too mushy.

My complaint about the gas pedal is it's too close to the brake pedal for my big ape feet, haha. (monkey) With my sneakers I'm fine, but when I have my work (dress) shoes on, the wider soles barely fit in between the brake pedal and the panel.

Anywho, congrats on your 5!!! It's amazing, ain't it? :D

@Jandree
Absolutely!! I just have the same thing here lol. It take some time to get used to, but it's going toget better.

Yeah, I found by sliding my heel back so I'm hitting the throttle with my toes rather than ball of my foot, I fit better :)

Glad I'm not alone with this, lol!!!
