We are taking the 5 with a few friends up to the mountains for a snowboarding trip in a few weeks. 8000+ ft to be exact.

I LIve near see level and have summer temps right now so Im just wondering what I need to do to get the 5 ready for the climb into the snow.

It is comin down pretty hard up there right now. They got 16" in the last 24hrs and its still comin.

Im in Socal and we are heading to June Mt. near Mammoth Mt. So if anyone knows the laws of the land around here feel free to chime in.

Thanks in advance.

Those roads usually aren't too bad. Just check on a set of chains, throw then in the back in case you need to crawl through bad weather. Have plenty of windshield washer fluid (an extra bottle in the back). Take a small shovel, and some kitty llitter in case you get stuck in an unplowed area.

I'm not sure what is best for California, but in N. Dakota in the winter if we were going out in the badlands away from the main roads we always packed emergency gear, water, food, sleeping bags etc. I don't know where you are going in the mountains but if you are getting off the main track you might find yourself in an emergency situation. I have read several stories of people in the California mountains getting stranded. Best to be prepared.

Since you probably can't warrant buying snow tires, just get the best chains you can find and remember to take it slow. Getting brand new all-season tires might help as well if you have less than 5/32" tread remaining. I recommend Goodyear Assurance Tripletreds or Toyo Versado LX, both are said to provide adequate snow traction.
