Swap F25M-R out for G15M-R

Hi, I've recently bought a 1999 Protege which I'm contemplating boosting on the cheap. I'd probably be using a GT28? from a Eagle Talon and I'm wondering if I should swap trannys. I can get a 2003 Protege SE with a 2.0 and 5 speed for dirt cheap. The only thing is the interior is covered with firefighting foam and some wires in the dash have burned. Also, the there seems to be a lot of play in the gearbox in my 99. I dont' know if it's the shifter, the cables or what exactly it is. It does stay in gear and it goes in and out of gear easily so I'm not really sure. I'm sorry if this doesn't make a whole lot of sense, it's 2:30AM here.
Thanks,
Richard

well lets start from the begining, the 2g eagle talon tsi comes with a T25 not a T28, either way if u get a good condition one your set. Now do you have the 1.8l motor or the 1.6l motor in your car? if its the 1.6 your probably gonna have to build or have someone build you a turbo manifold. As for th play in your tranny. We dont have cables for shift linkage its a bar setup, so unless your shifter bushings at the pivot point of the shifter are rotted completely then there shouldnt be much play. If it comes out of gear while driving, then its more then likely a tranny issue, thats how my tranny showed it was going. Now as for swaping the 2.0 tranny into your car, your gonna find it very difficult, I believe it is not a direct bolt on.

Browse around these forums and just start researching the best thing you can do. I think if your gonna turbo the 1.6 you should get the HiBoost kit, its expensive, but come with pretty much everything. If you have the 1.8 then look into some of the MSP turbo parts if you want just a little boost. The 2.0 and 1.8 share the same head i believe its the same, I know the manifolds are interchangeable and i think cams too, so idk what else you would touch.

good luck, and im typing this in a hurry before work, so if you have questions, post them and i'm sure I can help or more then likely others will too

Well, I was thinking about a kit, but I've helped my brother build two turbo setups for his cavalier so I know what's involved and I can get a lot of the parts for free. Such as the turbo for example, even if I have to buy a rebuild kit, they're only about 120.00 unless the shaft would need to be balanced again in which case I'd just find another turbo. I'd also need a different wastegate or I'd need to stick some washers in to raise the original one as I'd only be going to 5 or 6 lbs. As for the manifold I can make that up as well. My brother has some 1/2" T-304 Stainless plate and some 1/4" wall T-304 stainless pipe. ( I think it's 1/4" wall.) Also, about the shifter linkage, I'll make a video of the play in the shifter tomorrow and post it up to show you what I mean. It does always stay in gear, it's just that it feels really sloppy. Once it's in gear I can move the shifter left a right a few inches(In all gears.) which makes me think it is those bushings you mentioned. Where exactly are they located? Would I need to remove the centre console to replace them?

P.S. My engine is a 1.6L. As I said before, I want to do this on the cheap and I'm not shooting for more then 5 or 6 lbs if I even do turbo it.
Thanks,
Richard

The 1.6 is a robust engine, much better in stock form vs the FP/FS (1.8 in 99/00 and 2.0 in 01-03.5) It can handle a good amount of boost. It isn't certain that there is a G series to fit the 1.6 in the BJ (99-03.5) platform. Even if you get it to fit you need to figure out what trans mount brackets half shafts and intermediate jack shaft to use.

I see, I was under the impression this had been done before, oh well. I've got another question as well. How long do the rings and crank bearings usually last in this engine under boost? I just bought my car used with 163k on the clock for 1400, how long do you think this engine would survive under boost? I know this heavily depends on the way the engine was driven/ maintained before I had it, but lets just assume the maintenance was kept up on and it was driven pretty lightly. Would I get another 50-75k without too much trouble? I realize a used turbo would probably have to be rebuilt in the time, but I'm talking engine internals here.
