svt focus or P5?

that changes everything. if you're going to keep it a "long time" I'm assuming the mileage is going to get up there. having a ford for up to say... 50k miles isn't bad. having a ford for up to 100k miles on the other hand is asking for trouble. japanese cars like ours are obviously MUCH more reliable over the long haul. but again, if that's not part of the plan, who cares? i think it's funny when people who are considering leasing factor in the reliability of a car. to a certain extent, it doesn't matter how bad a car is.... it'll most likely run strong for the duration of the lease. and if not... F it! that's what a warranty is for.

anywayz... with all that being said, you may want to do some research on the ford. that might change your mind. if it was me, I'd get the svt and keep it for a few years.

Hey guys,
Lately I've been toying with the idea of selling my P5 and getting an SVT Focus. My P5 is an 03.5 w/ 18k miles, leather, moonroof, polished alloy wheels, 5spd, ABS, side curtain airbags, and the compass/thermometer auto-dimming mirror (fully loaded). It is completely paid off so I think that I could get a slightly used 03 or 04 SVT without really having to pay any extra. Here are my questions:

What do you think I could get for my P5?

How does the P5 compare w/ an SVT focus?

Again, I am only toying with this idea right now, I'm not sure if this is something I want to do, because I love my P5.

the focus has had quite a few recalls, but if you are willing to put up with reliability issues the focus can smoke the p5, the p5 is only nicer looking and a tad more reliable

I was on the fence between my P5 and a SVT Focus 5-door. The SVT was a 2003 (as is my P5) and it was only September, so the Sales Manager wasn't willing to bargain with me. They really wanted me to take it, just not that bad. It was red, which is just not my color, but when my wife saw it, she said, "Ohhhh, I could see you in that car."

BTW, I had a 2001 Focus ZTS (sedan) before my P5 and have nothing but praise for it. If it was a 5 speed I probably would have bought out my lease. It had traction and stability control and was peppy enough. It was back at the dealer 3 times for unscheduled service, but they were little things.

I never did get to test drive the SVT...kinda wish I had, but if I'm not seriously looking at a car I won't test drive it. I got my P5 for $247/month and the SVT would have been almost $300. I just couldn't swing it then - or now.

Am I the only one that's read nothing but good things about the SVT focus?

i've read good things about them performance wise, i just hate the exterior design. they have very high compression engines i believe

Aside from the obvious biased ownership of a P5, the SVT would not be a good choice. Especially a used model. Do some serious consumer report searching.

Here is the low down... I have looked at, rode in and researched both.

There are 3 things in favor of the P5...
3. $ $ $.... they cost LESS.

2. The P5 has more potential then the Fu**us.

1. NOW, this is the big one.....

THERE IS NO LITTLE BLUE AMERICAN MADE FORD "I WANT A RECALL" SYMBOL ON THE END OF THAT HOOD....

I'm not going to argue either way, but my friend has a 95 Ford Taurus. Total piece of s***, right? Well, that car has been withstanding outright abuse for 3 years now (including neutral drops daily), and he has put in ZERO money into it. I'm sure it's going to give sooner or later. But what I'm saying is that if that car is driven with respect, it will last a long time.

So I don't think Ford is all that terrible.

Alright guys, after thinking about this for a while, I decided to just keep the P5. I love how it drives and especially how it looks. The SVT is faster, but it just doesn't attract me like my P5 does. So thank you all for the valuable input and I'm glad to say that I've decided against the SVT, even though it is a sweet car.

I'd have to say good choice :)
A Ford focus SVT is still just a ford fuckus in my book. lol ;) I personally think they're one of the ugliest cars on the road. Also their by ford lol. Jmho tho :)
Glad you've made your choice

Check out http://www.focaljet.com

The Focus has just as much potential as the P5 if not more! I mean can u put a 3.0l v6 in a protege? For the fact can u put a 4.6l v8??? Both have been done fairly regularly with the focus.

However, given the fact that the new Focus with the 2.3 has just as much power (almost anyway) as the SVT, while not handling quite as nicely is still a little bit of a let down.

I seriously looked at an SVT, i could have gotten one for about 1k more then my p5 (xplan) but the damn dealer wouldn't let me test drive one without signing financial pw. I'll never go there again, my god it was a 20k car!

Anyway your kinda comparing apples to oranges with the SVT and P5, for a more appropriate comparison you'd have to go to a MSP, which would win hands down.

If I were u I'd stick with the p5, maybe wait for the MSP version of the 3 to come out, that will be (hopefully) one heck of a car as I think that the 3 is a much better platform then either the protege or the focus (even though now it's the same engine and chasis as the foci) The p5 has much better reliability then the focus, though the later model foci are pretty good, the SVT, especially the first year of them had some major issues. Also used SVT's are most likely going to be beat hard (especially with them being so new) any used ones u find will most likely be people unhappy with the car or ones that couldn't afford it both not good combinations.

Good luck with whatever you do.

Just curious....Did you go to the SVT forums and ask the same question ? Regardless,
glad your back in love with the P5 again.

Good choice. I was considering trading in my car for a MSP which wouldn't have cost that much $$ but it just wouldn't have been worth the hassle. I don't 100% like the design of the rear of the P5 but I also don't like the side profile of the MSP. Both had their flaws, MSP is faster but I'm satisfied with the power of the P5 which made the hassle of buying a new car not worth it at all. Since you decided to keep the P5, make yourself love the car again by buying something nice for it.

I have been on the Focus forums (focaljet) looking around for some info about the svt, but I'm not a member and didn't post the same question there. I did my spring cleaning on my car the other day, nice wash and wax, cleaned the interior, put my carpet mats back in, etc... and it is absolutely beautiful. There is no doubt that the SVT is faster stock, and has more potential for power than the P5, but lets face it, neither the P5 or SVT are really nice cars. When I graduate law school, I can buy a real nice car and make it really damn fast. For now, I am more than happy with the P5.
