Survey: Dunlop Tire Wear

I recently had a blowout after running over a manhole cover. After I removed the tire (front-passenger) and got it back to the garage I noticed that the inside edge of the tire was worn substantially more than the rest of the tire.

Has anyone else experienced uneven wear on their tires - especially the front passenger side tire?

As a result of my unfortunate blowout, I have already gone to the snows on steelies.

My one friend says it looks like I'm driving a mini-NASCAR!!

Yup - I have noticed that too - I dont know why - I have one of those digital pressure gauges too. If you look on the door - it tells you the PSI to inflate your frot and rear tires.
I think that the rear tires are supposed to be "softer" then the front....

My right front tire has real uneven wear on the inside1-2 inches of the tire. I rotate every 5k mi, and check psi at least weekly, if not more.
its going in to have alignment and camber checked next week.
I also notice a whomp whomp whomp whomp sound that speeds up and slows down at the same rate as the wheels, from the tires as well; most likely caused by the same thing that is causing the uneven wear, or because of the uneven wear...
Cross your fingers. :) :(

YEAH - GOOD LUCK - LET US KNOW WHAT YOU COME UP WITH - I'M SURE OTHERS ARE HAVING THIS HAPPEN TOO.

I have been rotating every 5000 to 7500 miles and keeping the pressures: 32psi front, 27psi rear.

This was what I remember from the Mazda webpage when the MP3 came out.

I have about 20000 miles on the tires (25,000 on the car and 5000 on the snow tires).

what kind of snow tires do you have, where did you get them, and how much did they run you?

I noticed that on my MP3 after my first tire rotation as well, but it was only the front I believe. Now they have 30000 miles on them and still going, but now I have the inside wear on all tires since I've lowered it. After 30000 miles now these have about had it even with the inside wear. Time for new tires!!!

I have Michelin Arctic Alpin 195/60-15 on steel wheels from the TireRack. I got them last winter and I think they ran around $100 per wheel + tire.

Had the same problem with all 4 Dunlop's wearing on the inside inch of the tires. I have 20,000 miles and the rest of the tire is in great shape. Went rounds with the dealer who said the warranty does not cover the tires. But the tires are worn due to a camber problem I argued for 3 days with the service manager. So the first service tech who looked at the tires said it was from me cornring too hard.. I said Bull how can you wear all 4 insides from cornering too hard, the outsides would have been worn as well... Round two, I was told it was from the springs settling umm yea right.. I called Racing Beat and they said that was complete crap that springs dont settle especially stiffened racing springs... Round three went to the manager and explaind to him that it is possible that since we have a Protege Frame and Body with a completely re-done suspension AND Racing Springs that lowered the car .750 inches from stock, that Mazda did not correctly camber the car due to the new suspension and or springs because there is a negative camber problem. I was told to call Mazda North America. I did set up a claim number and had a $500 credit towards new tires in 2 days. I told the service Manager I dont care about the tires I want the camber fixed and fixed right. All in All I got new tires ( Yokohama Parada Spec 2's ) an ailignment with all negative camber reports. I had to pay $280 for labor and the alignment which for 4 new tires was fine with me because I was having a hard time getting Mazda to squeak for more since tires are not covered under warranty. ... The saga continues now I have the tires and the damn car drifts right so It was back to Mazda today and the ailignment place to fix the right drift.. Dealerships suck...................:D

The wife's car has some un-even tire wear on the inside of the fronts. I just assumed that it was because the car was lowered. I really did not think that the Eibach kit should have cause that much of a camber problem. I am planning on taking the car in to have the alignment checked. I just put the stock wheels back on and I would like to have it checked with those wheels on. Has anybody used or needed a camber correction kit on the P5, is there one available? Thanks.

This can be blamed on all the right turns we do at high speed with highway on-ramps and off-ramps. In such state, the car's weight is much lighter on the right side of the car leaving the inner side to be in more contact and thus wear.

Without LSD, acceleration out of onramps will result in the same wear pattern due to the same reason aided by the fact that inner tire (passenger side) is spinning more than the outer tire since it has a shorter distant to travel.

Something like that....

My Wifes P-5 has a lot more miles on it than mine....hers has 15K miles...I rotate her tires at every oil change (3K miles) and the tread wear is VERY even all the way around....and on top of that at 15K miles...there is still a LOT of tread left....I would expect at this rate to get between 25K and 30K from the tires...which is a lot for high performance tires.

What did the reports say? I am doing everything I can to ADD camber to the car, and I can't. The OUTSIDE of my tires are shredding horribly. 15k miles and I am about 2/3 of the way through my SECOND set of tires. I can't get the inside to wear at all.
Please post your reports or give us the stats of what they told you. I am very curious as to how you got so much camber in all of these other cars.
Thanks guys.

I don't know if you guys should be comparing the P5 to an MP3 here. Completely different setups.

For the record, I've got two tires worn on the inside more then the rest as well, and I rotate every 4500 kms. It's not bad, as I only have about 12000 kms on the dunlops, but it's noticeable. I just had my camber/alignment done, but I had to take the summers off due to early snow this year.....sucks.

My tires wore evenly, but I wore my Dunlops SP9000's out in just under 12000 miles. I didn't think I was that aggressive of a driver. It had a lot to do with not rotating the tires enough.

From what the printout showed is that when the car was put on the ailignment rack that all tires had to be adjusted from a negative tow to the inside of the tires. ( there are 10 boxes, one for each tire then, front, back, side, side, front two and back two. It shows what it should be at and where it was and where it is now. The thing that sucks is now my stering wheel is crooked. )Thus creating a negative camber to all four caused by who knows what but at least Mazda gave me a $500 credit for tires. It felt good showing this to the service tech's and its also sad when the techs dont know what caused the camber.
