Sunroof deflector shield cracking

Anybody else have their sunroof deflector (optional accessory) cracking the front corner areas? The dealer mentioned they're on backorder and maybe there's a reason for that.... ie design flaw discovered?

No problem with mine....However I'l go take another look tonight.

There are a couple of possibilities I can think of offhand regarding the deflectors cracking...

Firstly, given that they are held on by a single clamp on each corner, there is always the chance that the screws are too tight...The clamps don't sit flush against the body (as the corners of the moonroof are rounded and the clamps are flat), so depending on how tight you have the screws, the added pressure of the moonroof frequently opening and closing can add strain to them...If the cracking you're getting is a star shape around the screws themselves, or a line stemming from the screw hole, this is the problem for sure...

If the cracks are just randomly happening around the sides or corners, it could possibly be damage from automated car washes...So if you run your 5 through the wash every now and then and there are powered brushes doing the cleaning, they can always press too hard upon the roof of the car...

Hope this can help you solve the problem...And I'm sorry to hear about it cracking on you...Maybe you can get the dealership to replace it under some sort of manufacture's warranty???

well the cracking is subtle, but can be seen coming from the screws tho not starred around them. The dealer put it in and I haven't messed with em nor used an automated wash. I agree the mounting is not the best, reminds me of how well the IPOD interface works method of execution. Its pretty tough looking material, but I'm wondering if they overtightened em in effort to get the seals to seat right.... it is covered no doubt and when one comes in I get dibs supposedly. thx

If I am not mistaken there no longer being sold in canada until some quality issue is fixed....

I looked closer, the cracks don't actually start at the screw holes, they start about halfway down. puzzling.

Was told basically the same thing. They're due out next month... err... tomorrow? Sometime anyways.

We have 6 on backorder, and all I was told was there was a "hold for approval". No answer when asked if they changed vendors or anything.
