Sunglass holder in overhead console stuck closed

So I got into my 2017 CX-9 GT this morning and attempted to retrieve my driving glasses from the overhead console sunglass holder. I pressed it up as usual, I felt some kind of click but it didn't drop down as expected. I then pressed it up again but it just moves up a bit and then just returns back to it's regular closed position. I don't want to force it because I don't want to break it or my glasses inside. has anyone had this happen? I'm not sure if something is broken or if my glasses just got wedged in there in a funny way that's preventing it from opening. Either way, I really need to find a way to open that without causing damage.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for those photos. I don't remember how that mechanism works, not something I really studied. Good to see that there is a little catch on the edge. Interesting, when I press on the left-side corner it doesn't budge, but the right side corner moves up quite a bit. It's like something is stopping it. Weird. I'll have to play with it some more tomorrow.

Well would you believe my wife got it to open. Turns out all you need is some long nails to kinda pry it open. It seems to work just fine now. Still not sure what caused that, perhaps some moisture got into the mechanism and froze overnight with the temp being significantly less than 0C.
