So I decieded to give Mobile1 Oil filters a chance after hearing so much of them highly on here. Ive been using Fram since I was a little kid.

So I did the wifes oil change. 05 M6s. Now I couldnt get the gasket off the filter to lube the whole thing. I thought It might have jsut been the filter but I havent found anything to confirm it.

Does it come out? I mean it should but It looked like it was pinched in there.

I did mine on a 02 P5 and had no issues.

but I think hers might be slightly leaking but not 100% sure.

BTW im not a noob ive been doign this stuff for years. I feel like an ass posting this. but I need confirmation of my gut feeling on this one.

As far as I know, the gasket is attached to the base plate of the filter. You don't need to take it off . I don't even think you can.

Just lubricate it prior to putting on the filter and you should be fine.

thats what i was thinking so as always i lubed the top part of the gasket and the threads and threw some in the filter.

anyone got 100% confirmation?

nice.

Ok 1 last thing.

the manual says it takes 6 quarts, 5.5 if you dont change the filter.

I checked the oil yesterday and it looked like ti was over filled.

Was it just the oil filter jsut draining back into the pan?

it is really important to get the area where the gasket seats very clean! Being where it is makes it hard to reach in there and sometimes its hard to see in there. But I have had issues with my 6s wagon doing the same thing. And it was 2 things. Not getting that area clean and not tightening the filter enough. You really have to crank that things down. The FRAM filter is the one that I have had the best luck with. When I bought this car used with less than 11k miles on it the filter was some off brand and was loose and leaking. No issues when I did what I listed above and used the fram.

Also the car does take 5.5 quarts. When you first put oil in the car it may read high until it is started and the filter fills up. The best thing to do is put in a little over 5.5 quarts, start the car, make sure there are no leaks, shut off the car and check the level. It will be a little low so you will have to add some. But very little. I have been doing that for the last 3 years. And you should also have some kind of degreaser to spray on the area that spill on exhaust. That could be what you are smelling or what it dripping.

The first and last oil change i found the problem with the oil from the filter going on the exhuast.

this past time i stopped that by putting a few pieces of paper towl on it to kinda guide the oil into the pan. it worked well

so if the car takes 5.5 then why does ti say that it takes 6.0 with a new filter and 5.5 without?
stupid mazda.

looks like ill pop out some oil when i tighten the filter.

I always clean the oil filter seat and all that jazz.

i like the fram especially since it has the rough grip part. I have found that using a piece of sand paper gives you a good grip when loosinging and tightening.

the new filter will fill up with oil once you start your car. And that will just show as oil being consumed since it stays in the filter and not in the pan. Whenever you loosen the filter a bout a half a quart of oil comes out.

So this is the break down. The oil pan holds 5.5 quarts. Total including the filter is about 6 quarts including what is in the filter. Make sense?

You always change the filter when you change the oil so it is just best to have about 6 quarts on hand to fill the car when you are changing the oil.

so it is just the oil draining back and im good with the 6 quarts in there.

i always change the filter with the oil. I could never understand why someone wouldnt change the most important part of the car.
