Strange sound during Idle

Just was wondering if any MS3 owners have noticed a faint grinding/almost abrasive sound when their ms3 is idling and the clutch is disengaged. Amazingly it disappears when I depress the clutch. I don't drive the car hard so no issues with overuse/abuse, so it has never been a concern for me until I returned from a 120-mile trip. I pulled into my driveway without issue after my trip, but like always decided to let the engine cool. And that ever-present grinding/abrasive sound turned into a squealing harpie sounds. Almost like a bad bearing or an A/c clutch going bad...I know that is not the problem I presume. It hasnt happened since then with several hundred miles acquired, but I still get that same almost inaudible abrasive sound every time I disengage the clutch. Im worried that overtime and with more miles that a serious problem will develop. God knows that if I take it into a dealership now, they would laugh at me. But if someone could give me some verbal ammunition to back up my concernsthis would be much appreciated.

When you depress the clutch that's when it's disengaged. Anyway that sound you hear with the clutch engaged (pedal out) is most likely the throw out bearing. When you depress the clutch and disengage it, you can even hear it spin down. That's normal, they all do it. After aggressive driving, you'll notice it's a little louder. I've already got 10k going on 11 and the sound is exactly the same, hasn't gotten any worse. The squeak you heard could be something else.

I wont say they ALL do it, but thats a throw out bearing for sure.

Its a result of using a cheap aftermarket TOB, or your TOB isnt lubricated properly.

Is your car totally stock with a never replaced clutch?

If it is and its under warranty, Id make the dealership fix it.

Do you own a mazdaspeed 3? There is nothing to fix unless Mazda decides to update the tranny for '08. This topic has been discussed on the speed3 forum and everyone heard it. He can still take the car to the dealer but I'm sure they'll find nothing wrong. Maybe I should hop over to the toyota forum and tell them about their cars.

Nice way to greet your expanding memberbase of people who like to discuss your cars with you.

I dont have an MS3, but I have done everything on a MP3. Not to mention I have a lot of experience working on cars, diagnosing them, troubleshooting them, and fixing them. Symptoms such as that dont vary from platform to platform. Its common knowledge what is described above is improperly lubricated TOB or a faulty TOB. Now whether its actually BAD, and harmful apparently remains to be seen, but the point is, its not necessarily "normal" and it SHOULD be addressed by Mazda.

I have no way of knowing if the topic has been brought up.

MS3s are relatively new. Id almost expect to see a technical service bulletin on it soon.

Go ahead and hop on over to the Toyota forum. Its my messageboard. Id welcome you with open arms.

There you go dude.

Thats an awesome informative post to alleviate any concerns.

I stand corrected, thats nice that the MS3 has that sort of setup. Looks like Mazda did it right with the drivetrain and its designed to take some power :)

I'm sorry you feel that way but you're making a big assumption that may not at all be correct. The mp3 and ms3 are two very different cars. I can't think of anything they share in common except the Mazda name. If you said you worked on the cx-7 or Ms6 that would be different. Anyway I have nothing against you personally and I'm sure your wealth of knowledge and experience would benefit everyone here, however, even the best can't be right all the time.

Just found this which pretty much corroborates what the above poster said regarding dual mass flywheels:

And I found at least 2 more forums with different makes that have the exact same rattle.
