Stock Head Unit Removal Stories

Ok, I'm new here because i just found this place searching for a way to get that darn Stock Head Unit out of the p5.

I personally had a fun (yea right) time getting mine out. I had to get a friend to help me.

So I went out and bought the removal tools right ... all 4 like instructed. I get the U-tools in the right holes and it won't budge. I noticed that the tools on the right side were going way past where the ones on the left go in.

So To sum it all up i ended up taking the center console apart, the glove box off, and several other vinyl pieces off to find that the darn clip on the right side was bent out and blocking the HU from sliding out. So with a friends help, and a lot of brute strengh he pulled on the left and i pushed on the right and it finally popped out.

So now to the point. Share your funny Story (if you have one) about getting the stock HU out of your Protege.

I don't have a funny story about my protege, but I was in my friends dad's truck years ago and we got hit by lightning. The engine exploded and the radio flew into the back seat. Damn near took my arm off....

I got mine out with the ghetto removal kit; coat hangers cut and bent to the appropriate size. That was an experience I never want to repeat.

Remind me never to ride with you during a thunderstorm (eek2)

I didn't personally do it, but IIRC, a friend of mine simply used a credit card to remove the HU. He showed a bunch of us how he did it one night. He got in the car, removed the HU and was out of the car in only a few minutes... He's never getting my keys!!

Short story:

Bought "the tool"
Didn't ******* work-- I think I bent the clips.
Took it to the dealer and had them take it out-- claimed they should fix under warranty-- didn't charge me.
Popped in the tape deck I bought off a forum member. Popped in (30 sec). Popped the whole unit back in (10 sec).

Hope it's not a b**** to get out again because I'm adding aftermarket amp and components in a couple weeks.
