STi vs. EVO

2008.5 MS3
so im thinking of getting an STi or an EVO next year, and im looking at either an 06-07 STi, or and EVO MR. does anyone have any preference for either one. i like my MS3 a lot but i want a AWD car. and i've been a big fan of both for years.
has anyone owned one of these? or just knows a lot about them?
i drove my friends 05 STi last week and really liked it, and today i drove a 06 EVO (not the MR) and to tell you the truth i hated it. i felt that my MS3 would KILL the evo on a 3rd gear pull. the STi would run train on both of us...

so can anyone give me an unbiased opinion and any other things i should consider.

thanks in advance

Hahaha!!! No kidding!
Unbiased is not this group of people! lolol
But I'll say I'm definitely into the EVO more than the STI although the STI is badass...I'd say if I were to spend my own money, I'd have to do more research on this but, personally I would buy an EVO MR.
STI is nice but MR is nicer IMO. Hope I helped.

From What I've researched about the two cars, the Evo handles better at its limits, and generally titled the champion in the handling department. The STI is an easier daily driver with a bit more punch, especially down low due to the displacement.

Styling is completely subjective. I personally like the looks of the 06-07 EVO MR better.

I'm not too sure about interior quality or fit and finish as I've never owned either car. I still feel like the MS3 interior beats both though!

Dont expect the MR to be much quicker than the GSR. If you think the GSR is as slow as your MS3 the MR will only be marginally quicker.

ive always loved STi's more. evo's seem to be all turbo no motor, subies seem to have better motors, and that exhaust note... so sexy. im really ignorant on the topic of both cars, haven't done any research. I just know a couple of people with evo's and they have nothing but problems with them.

to be honest. ive driven 06 stis 04 wrxs. but not an evo. i personally like the 05-06 evo MR. AWD is sweet for launches. but after that they are kind of useless, thats why our cars in some cases beat stis and evos. but from a dig forget it tho. i drove my friends wrx and my god it felt so slow. but when it comes to sti or an evo. your options for mods can go on forever it seems. but im also not much for the all blue interior of 07 stis either but they sound so ******* mean, to me evos seem more of a raw performance where as the sti is more refined? i could be completely full of s*** too haha. ill stick with my wagon... i dont wanna be apart of that group that drive an sti and everyone thinks its gods car. i like that our cars are so undercover haha, looks soo average but will let the **** loose if you want it too and leave the other person thinking wtf?

^^^ my thoughts exactly, and I didn't have to type them!! WOOT WOOT!

thanks for the feedback guys... i agree with almost everything you guys are saying. i like the look of the STi better, but the evo has its strong points too. when i hit the throttle on the STi, it was like nothing i ever experienced... this was with 4 people in the car too..... the evo just seemed weak. the turbo is load i guess but it doesn't make up for the fact that the engine is sooooooooooo much smaller than an sti something like something like 200cc smaller than the STi's. maybe more

so im going to try to drive a different evo 9 and see if i get the same response... and this time ill push it harder.

From what I have heard from a friend who had a STI is that if the EVO MR was out when he bought his 04 or 05 (don't exactly remember) STI he would have got the EVO. He said the difference between the GSR and MR was alot. He said the MR felt completely different with the 6-speed than the GSR with the 5-speed.

i also love the look of the evo, but am in love with the sound of sti's engine. the thing that would be my make or break point would be what the future holds for the car. if you intend to modify it.....although both have endless options...the evo comes in first. it's actually cheaper and easily more capable of decent horsepower with minimal stress. sti motors are strong right up to ~375hp and then things go wrong...motor....tranny....transfer case the list is quite large and expensive. the evo on the other hand can in some cases hit upward of 450hp closer to 500hp without any major isues.
all in all if you just want a stock useable fun yet comfy AWD platform....STI. if you intend to take it to the performance side of things with aftermarket help...EVO. i've been around a lot of evo and sti owners and this seems to be the general consensus.

i think to get the best answer is to ask yourself what is your goal with the car?

track *****
drag monster
show car
fun daily driver
tell us this....

Generalize much about your own community, guys?

LMFAO (rlaugh)(rofl2) unbiased opinion... that's a good one man!

Hahaha!!! No kidding! Unbiased is not this group of people! lolol
Speak for yourselves, guys. Lots of people here can discuss cars without being biased about them.

RE: the OP

What are you looking for in a car? Daily driver, track days, drag strip? Are you considering a new MR or a used one? Any reason why you feel you need AWD to get what you want out of a car?

yes there are lot's of people that can do that BUT there are also a lot, maybe a lot more, that can't!

which year MR? there's an 8 MR, 9 MR and 10 MR.

the difference mechanically between the MR in the 8 and 9 is the slightly different suspension and the 6 speed gear box. that's it. to me that's not worth the price difference (though i don't know what has happened in the used market). a "GSR" will perform nearly identically. the only place you will see a difference is on a track and the difference comes from the smaller gear spacing. the final drive of both transmissions is nearly identical. if you aren't using this as a track day toy i'd say save some money and go with a normal evo.

the evo feels much different with a few hundred dollars in mods. i think i spent around $800 on mine for a TBE and reflash. pulled much harder and actually pulled all of the way to redline instead of falling flat part way up.

the sti is also a good car. it's hard to make a bad decision between the two. when i got mine the price of the evo was much lower and i assume that is at least somewhat true in the used market so i would go with a non-MR evo.

also if drag racing is your thing i'd say get neither. the cars were meant for turns not for going straight. both are much more expensive to own if you're going to beat the s*** out of them launching all of the time.

and of course, what does this have to do with the MS3? it's in the MS3 section so i must be missing it

Evo > STI. Both are great cars but the Evo is better.

Evo would make a good all around race car. Definately the fastest thing in a straight line or around a corner for 30 grand. Plenty of good aftermarket support out there to break 300 awhp easy.

Your MS3 is faster simply because of powertrain loss on the Evo. If the Evo were only FWD you could tell the diff. There is a significant loss of power to move all those AWD parts.
