Stereo Install Question

Been visiting the forum every day, best forum ever. I don't post too much because I've only had my car for a month.

After my DaveB rings (the best $30 I have ever spent on a car), I got a changer to replace the single CD that came with my black 2002 P5, which I bought used.

Just a question for you guys who have installed new head units: is there anything I should know before going in there and changing it? Anything *you* wish you knew before doing your install? Thanks in advance.

Quick story: I live in PA and we have "special fund" license plates we can buy to replace the gold and blue ones. One of the special fund plates is for D.A.R.E. (Drugs Are Really Expensive) and is completely black. Got it because it looks much better on my P5.

Anyway, you can't choose your number for the plate. You get the next one sequentially when you order. I got mine yesterday and the last two "numbers" on the plate? "P4." One away. AAH! How cool would that have been?

well first off get a good install kit the one i have said it was for the proteg but i think it would work in a chevy truck better for gad sakes.

really it is worth the little extra money, also get a wiring harness adapter don't cut your origional.

hello Mitch and Welcome to our happy little corner of the net, and to our Club. There are TWO BIG fridge'S in the corner with anything you can think of in them...help yourself...of course only take what you can LEGALLY have. (stash)

make yourself at home on one of the big fluffy couches, kick your shoes off, put your feet up on one of the tables, yes we are allowed to do that, mom don't care....and take it easy.

oh...btw....every once in a while a food fight breaks out...so you may not want to wear nice clothes here.

Welcome!! (stash)

What BRAND/MODEL of Headunit do you have? or are you talking that you got a second hand STOCK 6 DISC CHANGER? makes a difference...

IF You got an aftermarket unit....do as Seth suggested....oh yeah, and buy yourself two sets of the FORD headunit removal tools OR find my thread on "removal tools" and make your own to pull the deck. but DEFINATELY get a harness and do NOT cut your original harness.

You should definetly get the radio removal tools it makes pulling the stereo a one minute job. They are like 2-4 dollars at any auto parts store. Sometimes auto parts places call them Ford radio removal tools. They look like two "U" shaped pieces of metal. When you take off the 2 black plastic pieces on your radios sides the 2 removal tools go into the holes. They push in and release the locks holding the radio in.

Another thing you might be intrested in is the MP3 pocket it goes under an aftermarket radio and gives u a nice pocket for cd's etc. I really like it in my Pro5. The dealer sells them but you can probably find one cheaper on ebay. :D

If you can't get a MP3 pocket (which I think is the best looking), then order a Scosche or buy it from a stereo shop. They are better looking than the ugly Metra kits.

My fault - it's a stock changer. No wiring needs to be changed or anything. What's the best way to get in there and take it out without making it a day-long project?

Where did you pick up the 6 disk changer? I would be interested in one of these possibly if the price is right.

You just need 2 sets of Ford style radio removal tools. With them in place the radio will just pull out. The new radio should use all the same connections then just slide back into place so long as both are double din units.
