Hot Three readies for market launch
Making its world debut in Geneva back in February, here are on-the-road photos of the Mazda 3 MPS (Mazda Performance Series), a hot version of its Focus-sized (and, indeed, Focus-based) family hatchback that's set to take on the VW Golf GTI and Opel Astra OPC. The Mazda, however, may well have more power than its VW and Opel rivals, because it shares its engine with the 6 MPS, a 2.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder motor. In the 6 it develops some 250bhp.
Unlike the 6 MPS though, the 3 is unlikely to feature four-wheel drive. However, because it's based on the Ford Focus/Volvo S40 platform, it is technically possible, because the Volvo is available with a Haldex all-wheel-drive system. Should the MPS absolutely be front-driven, though, we'd imagine that the engine will be de-tuned too, to a level that the front wheels will more easily cope with.
It certainly looks the part, though. The already dynamic appearance of the 3 is in this instance enhanced by re-profiled front and rear bumpers, a large exhaust, a tail spoiler and large alloy wheels. It's reputedly going to take another bow at the Paris Motor Show in September, which means it'll probably become available at the dealers in early in 2007.

If my P5-T didn't own me so badly I would be first in line. Could never justify the time and money I put into it...

Definately has alot of potential!!

i gotta pay off my P5 first...

Definitely gonna a be a sleeper. Harder to tell apart from the regular 3 than the MS6 from the regular 6. Nice to see pix taken on the road, but the info is dated. It definitely won't be AWD and it won't be "detuned". It will be programmed to limit torque in 1st gear and will put out about 7-8 fewer HP because the tight engine compartment required a more restrictive exhaust.

I'm going to be behind the power curve on this one. I for sure won't have my turbo by the time it releases :*(

Word on the street is about $25k USD.

I would venture a guess that it's base price.

if its anything like the msprotege... there is one list price... i.e. no base price.. simply a price...now what you pay is all up to you

Yeah, I think it's gonna be a list price around $23-24K with few options. I wonder how many dealers are gonna try the old "market adjustment" markup. My MS6 sticker had a $3K markup but that was gone as soon as said "thanks, but no thanks."

the 6disc and sunroof are some of the only things I can forsee them charging extra for...everything else is uaully standard on speed models.

That exhaust looks Niiicceee... and it's got a stubby!! Also love the LED Tails. They should at least make them optional on the S and T's for those of us that don't want leather seats. Ya' know, Texas... sun... BLACK... HOT!!!?
Speaking of which, anyone heard if they've improved the HV and especially the A/C in the 07's?
I'm not feeling those wheels though.
Man, that black tape sure hides a lot!! I could hardly tell that was a Mazda. (glare) (lol)
