Speed3 wins Car & Driver comparo

Home for lunch and just got the issue.

Pretty sweet win after Mazdaspeed Protege and Speed6 ranked poorly against the competition (according to C&D).

Haven't read yet but

5th Impreza WRX TR (pwn3d)
4th Sentra SE-R Spec V
3rd Cooper S
2nd GTI (5-door)
1st Speed3 GT

Niiiiice.

That should be no surprise to MS3 owners. I am surprised that the WRX TR(that's a base stripped model?) finished last. I recently gave a ride to a 2004 WRX owner (while in Canada) and I think he headed to the nearest Mazda dealer when we were done!(deadhorse

Did I mention they claim 0-60 this time to be 5.4? 1/4 mile is 14 seconds flat at 101 mph.

They must abuse the hell out of it to get those times.... but the 5-60 street start of 6 seconds flat takes the WRX by a 1/2 second and the others for even more.

I checked there site and it says the MS3 placed 3 and the WRX is 1st.Am I missing something?

New test. Guess they learned how to launch it better. Different temperatures? Are there different tires on the TR? They didn't say.

All that's obvious to me is most people under most conditions would be able to launch the WRX faster from a dead start to 60. But it's game over otherwise.

I for one stopped dropping my clutch when I was 17. OK, 19. OK, 22.

That SE-R was fun. But I did eventually burn out the clutch around 70K miles.

Hum... what am I missing... how can the 5-60 be SLOWER than the 0-60 times?

it was explained to me that they have to get permission from the manu to do those comparo's and honda probably just said... FU... i know toyota does all the time.

I have read the first 2 cars and I find it odd that the only complain about the SE-R yet it beats out the WRX for 5th place.

The WRX should have at least beaten the SE-R. It was the second fastes and had to push to of the cars to safe spots on the highway when they could not go any further due to weather.

I call shenanigans on the CD staff.

^^ Yeah, but as we all know by now, C&D like to say they rate the "entire" car and not just one aspect of it. The TR is a stripped down WRX... so I'm sure their judgement was more based on what you get for your money, the entire package, rather than just performance stats.
But I haven't read the article yet... so what the hell do I know. lol

I work in a bookstore so I read it today over my lunch break. I'm also surprised that they placed the WRX dead last, especially since they didn't really clarify exactly how the SE-R was any better to beat it. I was also surprised how they dumped on the handling of the Mini a little; so far everything I've heard about this latest one says it's not as good as the last gen new Minis. Of course it's nice to be put ahead of the girlwagon GTI, since its owners are such snooty fanboys. It is good to see someone getting impressive performance numbers from the MS3, since we all know it sure as hell "feels" faster than a mid-14s car. They also praised the braking and the transmission, two things I think are lacking in the MS3. Sounds like the MS3 was exactly what they were looking for in this particular comparison test.

Yes, I have a feeling ol' Honda is pretty pissed off at the MS3's success.
The 06+ Si was hot snot for a while but the new kid on the block is taking over.
I imagine they want to maintain their better than the rest image by not letting it lose to the MS3.
