Speed 6 questions

Hi guys, I am new on this site. My name is Tim and I currently own a '91 mustang with all the go fast goodies and drag suspension....... yadda yadda.

I am looking into buying a '06 speed 6 within the next week or so. I went and test drove one tonight and I have a few questions.

1. What is the rev limiter set at?

When I hammered on it in 1st gear it felt like the rev limiter kicked on way to early.

2. What kind of gas milage does the car get on the highway?

3. How do I know if the power loss reflash has been completed?

Thanks for your help.

-Tim

1. its set at 6800 rpm, but you start to loose power at 5500rpm in stock mode.
2. i don't know
3. what I tried is put the car in third at 2000rpm and punch the gas, if you feel a like the car is heavy after 3000rpm then you probably still have it. really the best way to know though is to get a boost gauge and read it, when power loss is present you can only get 10-11 psi and normally its 15-16psi

Thanks for the reply.

If the wrong octane level was used in the vehicle would that cause the problems that I am describing?

I've owned my 06 MS6 since late November. I've kept mine bone stock so far.

Not sure about the rev limiter question, but I can address your other two questions:

The power loss issue is actually a recall. Mazda tracks every MS6 VIN to know if the reflash has been performed or not. After I bought the car, Mazda sent me a letter directing me to a "personalized" web site. When I logged on with my car's VIN, there was a notice stating that the recall needed to be performed. When I later brought the car in for an oil change, the dealer ran the VIN, noticed the outstanding recall, and performed the reflash then.

So the short answer to your question is that yes, both the dealer and Mazda know if the car has been reflashed or not. From personal experience, I noticed a HUGE difference when merging onto freeways... the boost really stays on a lot longer.

About gas mileage, I have tracked every tank of gas since I bought it, mostly from the same gas station (Sam's Club 93 octane). Here's a list of mileages per tank:

19.974
21.426
24.255
21.707
23.323
20.955
21.353
20.819
21.404
21.710
22.862
22.211
22.187
24.736
22.460
22.229
23.063
25.414
22.420
22.698
23.010
26.920 (highway only)
26.440 (highway only)
22.562

The first tank I disregard, since I don't think the dealer filled it up the whole way. So you can see that for mixed city I usually get 22.XXX mpg, and a couple of tanks of pure highway driving I came close to 27.

Hope this helps.

I also track my mileage and I was filling up every 2 days for the last year. I've gotten just about the same numbers.

its tends to show more when you use anything below 93 octane

Most I got out of mine was mid 20s all highway. I usually get around 19-21mpg mixed city & highway driving.

I wonder if we might get a little better mileage with synthetic engine oil, and/or synthetic diff and transmission fluid.

I also noticed looking back at my spreadsheet that my mileage went up slightly after the reflash.
