Special ordering a new Mazda5 -- experiences?

Does anyone have any experience "special ordering" a new Mazda5 to their specifications? In other words, if my local dealer cannot find a car anywhere with the options I'm looking for, how long does it take to get the car from the day I place the order?

Any experiences with this situation?

It really depends on how many Mazda dealerships you have in your immediate area...If there a few of them, the dealerships can arrange a trade and have the car to you in a matter of anywhere between a few hours or a couple of days...The hardest part about a special order is getting the right color you want paired with the transmission you want...Any options (including a moonroof) can be installed at the dealership or outsourced to a shop that can accommodate it...Either way, you shouldn't be waiting more than a week max for the exact car you want...

The dealership I was at didn't have the color my wife and I wanted on the morning we went out shopping, so after test driving a different one, the dealership got us the exact car we wanted from another dealership across town...We picked up our car later that evening...

If there aren't any other dealerships near you that have the car you want, they should be able to get you one from Japan within a week or two...Any salesman who tries to tell you that you would have to wait longer is lying to get you into a different car...Trust me, if a dealership wants your business, they have the power to get a car on their lot within two weeks easily...If not, go to another one that will go that extra mile for you...Just remember to be firm and get what you want without any compromise...It's your money, your investment, and your car...

Best of luck with your purchase!!! :D

In my personal experience, a custom built Mazda5 from Hiroshima, Japan took 4 months. Ordered it in May 06, took delivery in September 06. Was this an isolated case for some reason? Perhaps. But you’ve been warned.

With that being said, A)… your dealer can probably ballpark a time estimate for you (mine was close with a 3 month estimate) and B)… I still think it was worth it to get it exactly how I wanted it, an important thing for my first new car.

It took me 2 months when I special ordered my '97 Legacy GT with a manual transmission. But they were made in Indiana.

my Mazda dealer seemed confident he could "pull in" whatever 5 i wanted - color - options, anything, from other dealers.

but i ended up buying one with more stuff than i wanted so we didn't have to do that.

Assuming you're trying to order an 08 (Since there are fairly substantial changes from 07 to 08, the factory probably has ceased production of the 07's), it will probably take a little bit longer than jandree's 5, because of the ramp up for the new 08's.

Yes, I agree I would like to order the car exactly the way I want it and they've been quoting me 4 months...yikes. Now the big question is that 4 months from the first delivery, or can I get my order in now and shave 2 months off the time from when the first 2008's reach these shores.

Well if they're quoting you 4 months, that means if you order one today, you'll have it in December.

Considering I ordered my 2007 Mazda in May 2006, I think you would definitely be ordering a 2008 in August of 2007.

I thought that I had read that they were not starting production on the 08s until at least October. If that is the case then I wouldn't expect to see any, much less a special order, stateside before Thanksgiving.

Well, I've decided to pull the trigger and I simply can't buy the car! Very frustrating to say the least. The salesman at the dealership has been incompetent at best and no one can tell me how to get a new Mazda5. I can't order a 2007 and the 2008's can't be ordered yet.

If this keeps up, I'm going to have to get that dreaded Toyota Sienna afterall (the 2008 come out this month).

...Just check with another dealer, it really makes the difference sometimes. It may be farther but you might find the right match w/o ordering it...

This time of the year many sales guys are trying to close any good deal on 2007 models (got my 2006 around end of July 2005 and they were stiff, one year later I got tons of mail with cool deals... too late for them).

Remember, dealing with the sales guys: 1-4 hours, driving/riding your cool ride (or a Sienna.... ewww): at least 2 years :D

I agree that going to another dealer is your best long term option. Dealers can arrange a swap, and you can get at least in the ball park of what you want. My dealer brought mine up from 200 miles south of us to make the deal, and I had a discount from my neighbor who works at Ford. We didn't get the exact color we wanted, Stratos Blue, but everything else is exactly as we wanted and we couldn't be happier. If you are in a rush to get the vehicle then I understand, but otherwise, take your time and I'm willing to bet your patience will be rewarded with a much better driving experience.

I have a slightly older 2004 Sienna, without the rip-snorting 3.5L V6 that can scoot the Sienna 0-60 in less than 8 seconds. Not fun to drive at all, but a comfortable and very competent appliance.

I once went from the well-padded 3rd row of the Sienna right over to the drivers' seat of the Mazda5, and found myself briefly lamenting the loss of foam cushioning. Very briefly.

When special ordering a new Mazda5 (and waiting 4 months), can you go outside of the standard packages? For instance here's what I'm looking for:

2008 Mazda 5 Touring
* Xenon HID Headlights
* Black Leather Interior
* Bluetooth handsfree phone

I just received the order guide for the 2008 and all the above options are listed as STD on the Grand Touring and not available for the Touring. The question is if I special order the car, could they build it to my specs? Really what I want is a fully loaded Mazda5 Grand Touring w/ 5-Speed Manual.

If I special order the car today, August 14, 2007 and need to wait four months does that mean I get the car December 14, 2007.

- OR -

Because the offical release date is October 1, 2007 for the new 2008 Mazda5 does that mean I won't get the car until Feburary 1, 2008?

Nope. GT is only available in Automatic... although it will be a 5-Speed Automatic at least. Not sure about the Bluetooth, but you can definately add the Xenon HID and Black leather aftermarket.

And as far as your 4 month question, I can't be sure but I would have to lean towards the December date. Just because they're not releasing them yet doesn't mean they're not building them yet. FWIW, I have a feeling at least 2-3 weeks of the time is just transit from Japan, too.

Here's what I plan on changing A.S.A.P. any feedback or comments on any of the items listed below is greatly appreciated!

* Katzkin Tuscany Midnight Leather Seats
* Apexcone 4500K 55watt HID replacement bulbs
* H&R Lowering Springs
* 225/45 R17 Summer Tires

Am I missing anything here?
