Speaks, audio questions

Any particular reason NOT to go with the 5x7/6x8 size for aftermarket speakers? Like, is there a pressing reason to use 6.5's over 5x7/6x8's?

I have (2) pairs of 6.5's coaxial-separates MB Quarts from my Beetle install, and am thinking of moving them over, but also thinking of buy (2) new pairs.

What's the thinking on 6.5 vs 5x7/6x8 ?

I dunno - It's not that they're laying around...In my Beetle, they were running of a Phoneix Gold ZX450 4 chan amp, and the mid driver kept blowing, especially the right front corner. That mid was replaced 4 times, and the left front was replaced twice.

Really annoying, actually. I had to keep going to my friends' shop and have them swap the driver out. Ticked me off to no end.

Luckily, though, he just swapped it out from his stock, and RMA'd them the bad one. I didn't have to wait weeks to get a replacement unit, so I do't have a complaint there, but not everyone does that!

I was eyeballin' 2 pairs of CDTech HD-63's.

Anyone got opinions on those?

THe short list is:

Infinity Kappa 65.2i's
Crystal CXe615
DEI 2052/2062's
Image Dynamics CTX6's
Phoenix Gold Tantrum-X 5.0 or 6.0's

Crossfire's, maybe, but I need some opinions. I don't wanna spend a ton either. Except for the CDTech's, all the above are under $200pair (or DANG close to it), and I need 2 pairs.

Lightning Audio any good?

lightning audio us just a branch off of RF as far as i'm concerned. so i wouldn't get them. why not put a nice component set up front, with a decent set of coaxials in the rear?

Infinity makes a 5x7 component system, but it's from the Reference series & not the Kappa series...

That's what I plan on using...

Well I wouldn't waste much time with the speakers that keep blowing as they are either junk or somehting in the install/setup is amiss.

6x8s will yeild more midbass then a 6.5. The 6.5 will have better sq but not dramaticly. Many people couldn't tell the difference without an a/b comparision to switch between.

I really like the Image dydnamics but I don't think the set you listed were the ones I heard at a local competiton.

As far as what we at tweeter have. Most people usualy like the JL TR or the Alpine type s 6x8 coaxles the best. No one really ever likes the 5x7 boston.

It's the RSB something-or-other. from 99/2000. the coaxials that came with the MusiComp crossovers. Cost about $300/pair about that time. Weren't top-line, but were not the bottom either.

I dunno. Everything's been checked and re-checked at least a half dozen times. We did not use the factory wiring for the speakers, instead running new wires.

I dunno. I expected a bit more from MB Quarts. When all 4 work, it sounds absolutely fantastic, and the mids are absolute astounding. Just keeping 4 working in the car has been a mission!

So I won't miss much using 5x7's?

I had 2 set of the 5.25" running with numerous amps that were to powerful and they never even flinched. I also had the crossovers at 150hz and up.
The only natural conclusion is distortion.
They weren't in a sealed enclosure were they?

Nope. 6.5 " coaxial separates" they call them - the tweeter on a suspended bridge. Fed by a Phoenix Gold ZX450 into the MB QUart MusiComp crossover. Each coax had 1 channel on the amp, @ 4Ohms.

I know like I said I had 2 sets of the 5.25" versions and never had a blown one EXCEPT for when I had a HACk shop build some kicks and they selaed the speakers in. They cooked in a day.
After that I opened up the kicks and they were fine.

I know I'm a little late on the reply, but go with the Infinity Kappa 2-way 5x7. I have those and the 6.5 Kappas in the rear and they are killer. Bass response is quite impressive for no sub and they fill the car up with sound very nicely.
