Speaker question/ CD player removal

I'm not experienced with audio at all, so please forgive my overall stupidity in this subject.
When I bought my '99 Protege, the driver's door speaker wasn't working. I removed the door panel, pulled out the Jensen speaker and found two wires connecting the speaker to the wires coming out of the door. One of the wires was yellow, and had a plastic cylinder thingy on it that said "peripheral PBASS". I tested to see if power was getting to the speaker, and found that the yellow wire was dead. I removed these 2 wires and connected the speaker directly to the wires in the door. The speaker now worked, but was much louder than the passenger's door speaker. So I removed that door panel, and did the same thing to the speaker- removing the yellow "peripheral" wire and the other wire, connecting the speaker directly to the wires in the door. Now both speakers work and are much louder than before.
So what does this "peripheral" wire do? To me, it just made the speakers quieter. Should I get a new one to replace the dead one? Is it important? Thanks for any help.

Also, the stock mazda cd player works horribly (skipping, volume nob doesn't work probably) and I am going to replace it with my Kenwood cd player from my old car (which also works poorly, but better than the mazda cd player), But I can't figure out how to get the stock cd-player out. Are there instructions somewhere on this site? Thanks.

I am gunna guess it is a 'bass blocker' or Capacitor that blocks lower frequencies to save smaller speakers. Reason why it is louder is prolly because you are running full freq now, be careful though, you will blow the speakers eventually on a stock radio running moderate to full volume.

as for removing your stock radio? Having never really taking a mental picture of one I can only guess it is a standard DIN Radio that you'll need the tool that slides intot he tiny holes in each corner of the radio and locks in to allow you to pull/slide it out?

hey i just bought those things at wal-mart for about $4 to remove my radio and I got the right side one to stay in and the right side of the radio is loose but I cant get the left side on in and the left side of the radio isnt loose. Its being a pain in my ass, and I can take the one on the right side out untill I get the other one in and remove the radio so its really pissing me off right now!!! Help?

this might be oversimplifing this, but have you tried locking the right side back and starting on the left side first? Try to pull both sids out at one time...

Well i think thats my problem, the right side is pulled out about 1cm and I cant get it to go back in any further, and the left side tool just wont catch on anything. And I read that I needed 4 of these things??? I cant take this stress, im just about to take a crow bar or something in a min.

Got it out, had to take the whole dash apart and push the clips in, the left side was pushed in too far, damn mazda dealer!
