Speaker Problems

Hey. I just bought a 2000 Protege and It came with the factory CD player.. Now.. the front speakers werent working at all but I was going to change them anyways. I installed my new CD player (not speakers yet) and the front speakers still didnt work.. (Makes sense) I took my front speaker off my other car and hooked them up.. Still didnt work... I took my multimeter and went from the negative wire on the speaker in the door to the negative wire in the wiring harness and there is continuity( current gets through all the way). Is there something about these cars that I dont know of? My CD player used the front speakers just fine in my old car. Just looking for suggestions.. I thought I had all the bases covered but maybe I am missing something..

You mentioned checking the negative wire, did you check the positive wire also?

Yep.. I checked them both.. It just doesnt make sense to me.. If a signal can get through the wire.. why wouldnt the speaker produce sound.. I even tested with a speaker that I knew worked... It just seems to be a stumper.. It doesnt make sense.. thats why I am sure I must be missing something..

If the wire was shorted out against the frame of the car, it will still show continuity between both points. Try placing one tip of your meter on the frame of the car and the other on the wire. If there is a connection, the wire is shorted out.

Also, check to make sure the head unit is putting out sound by connecting a speaker directly to the back of it (you might need to extend the wires a little).

Thanks for the tip.. good point.. I will check it out in the morning and let you know how it goes..

Once again I am backlogged.. I am putting new connecting rod bearings in the car the cheap way.. check out my post in the 1.8L section and tell me what you think....

Connect the positive and negative wires together in the door and meter accross the wires at the deck(with it not hooked up of coarse) Record that value and post it please.

If it is near 0, then all is well. If that is the case, then hook up the speaker and use a battery to pop the speaker. Basicly hook upthe positive wire to the + of the battery and the - of the speaker to the - of the battery. The speaker should fire foward and will make a "pop". A 9 volt or a AA is fine for this.

If you meter a low impedance and continuity and the battery pop does not work then you are using the meter wrong.

Let us know how that goes

Two last stupid question, does the radio turn on at all?
Can you tap the wire right behind the radio and get it to work on any speaker?

a few things to check...

do you have rear speakers connected, are they producing sound?

i know its unlikely haveing tried 2 headunits, but id the fader all the way to the rear on the headunit.

is the headunit playing?

is the heaunit wired correctly.

-Rears are connected
-Fader Ok
-headunit is playing
-Wired right up perfect..

I am just in need of time to give it a good go-over.. In progress
