Speaker pics

I replaced all the speakers with alpine sps-610s(front and rear) and polk dxi351s (dash). I took some pictures. They might be helpful for people who are concerned with the clearance. I used the stock brackets and their connectors. Sound great too.

Great pics! They actually give me a great preview of what I will actually be dealing with when I attempt my upgrade. I haven't put time away to go remove my door panels yet.

Thanks for the Info - I'm seriously thinking of doing the same - do you find that the 351s in the dash are too loud for the front door speakers? Do you have more photo's with the speakers mounted in the doors?

I really want to fit some Alpine SPG-17Cs splits instead of the front 610's and dash speakers but having a rough time working out where I will break into the existing speaker wires.

Ideally, I want to hack into the C-38 joint connector behind the dash and feed the cross-over in there - but I just can't find it. Any idea?

Otherwise I could cut the speaker wires going int othe door connectors C-08/ C-10 - but this is least prefered as I would need to run new wires to the tweeters and and leave the existing tweeter wires floating....

If not possible I'll probably do the same as you, but put some Alpine SPS-401's in the dash in parallel with the 610's. I think I can get them to fit - but cutting out some additional plastic might be hard due to close proximity of window and getting a tool in there....

Oh BTW, did you disconnect the battery when doing your installs? I'm not sure what else besides the windows gets reset .. i-Stop?

Great photos thanks, just one question. After cutting the OEM speaker out of the bracket how did you get the aftermarket speaker to attach to the bracket? From the pic it looks like the original speaker and the bracket are all one piece

I'm not the person to ask about audio. I chose those speakers based on someone else's thread below. But I will try answering your q's.

The dxi351s are installed on the dash. Not the front doors. The thread has pics.

I only replaced the speakers I'm extremely happy with it. I also put sound deadener onto the doors, liftgate, spare wheel well, rear quarter panel if those make a difference in sound quality. But less road noise I would say. No exhaust note anymore.

Yes they are directly attached to the brackets. I cut through the paper on the OEM speakers. The last pic showed this.

I installed the speakers using self-tapping screws supplied from the aftermarket speakers.

I just can't bring myself to do this to my Mazda. The other thing that bothers me is its impossible to find replacement car speakers with neodymium magnets like those stock units have. The cheap ferrite magnets on those replacement speakers just add too much weight to the car. For those who do not know neodymium magnets are more powerful and much lighter than ferrite magnets are but they are expensive.

Not sure this would make you feel better, the speaker+bracket assembly is $17 from jim ellis mazda.

Btw,we are talking about adding 10lbs max to the car. And that mass is well distributed around the car. the weight of the driver is more important than those speakers. And yes my mpg doesn't change.

hwibowo, I guess you have a good point when you put it that way and I'm surprised at the low replacement costs of those Mazda speakers.

Thanks

Hi, did you have the Bose 9 speaker set up?

Well I did the upgrade over the weekend. I went to my local car audio and listened to some speakers and settled on the Alpine SPR-60C splits - mainly as they were on sale and couldn't pass up on the price but they did sound a lot better then the S and G type speakers.

I also had an opportunity to pick up the SPS-410 coax speakers and offered them up to the 3.5" dash plastic mount (in store ) and there is no way they are going to fit without a lot of work and just not worth it IMO.

The woofers fit very snuggly into the existing door plastic mounts (cutting the old speaker out) however there was a tiny air gap between the existing speaker mount and the alpine and screw cut out slots which needed to be sealed. The neo magnets on these woofers are suprisingly small and don't protrude very much at all.

The tweeters were pretty straight forward to fit - just used the flush mounting kit onto existing dash plastic mounts under the dash grills. I tried to use the stealth mounting kit but couldn't remove the tweeter grill (glued on) and didn't want to do damage the tweeter. Anyway, under the dash grill you can't tell anyway.

The cross overs came with prewired cables and were way long enough to plug into the tweeters and splice in to existing speaker wiring.

Sound wise - very impressed. I found that by fading 90% of the sound to the front and these speakers really do sing. From out side the car you can really hear the bass. Bass is very strong and tight. The tweeters are very crisp and smooth at the same time. I've had the head unit up very loud and haven't noticed any distortion. I might put in some sound dampening later.

Two tips, when removing the doors - take out the white plastic clips and slot back into the panel, ie don't leave in the door. The rubber window seal slides off the door panel and is fit to the door before puttting the panel back.

Now that I've whett my appetitie - I can't resit putting in an amp and sub - but maybe another day.... I'll try and post some pics later.

I popped Polk 351's into the dash of my Mazda CX-5 Sport. Ports were already wired, but had to splice since I couldn't seem to find adapters that fit. Sound improvement was strong, especially the highs and mids. Guess I'll have to change out the door speakers if I want to improve the bass. Polk speakers are the best you can get for the money.

I just put the Polk DB651 speakers in the doors (note NOT the "S" slimlines, but the full depth ones) mounted in the OEM speaker baskets. For those on the fence about these speakers, they do fit just fine, still about 1/4 gap between the tweeter and the door grill.

One extra tip... I installed these this morning after a fair amount of rain over the past couple of days. The door interior and back of the speakers were soaking. Enough that water was dripping out of the speaker baskets when I took them off! Even though the Polks are marine rated, I would recommend you do as I did and sandwich a sheet of heavy polythene sheet between the back of the basket/mount and the inside surface of the door. 10" square pieces will do the trick. That will protect the speakers and coils/wires from splashes.
