Spark plugs and ignition systems oh my!

Ok, what's the deal with that stuff? What is good? What should I stay away from? I've got a little bit of money saved up(not enough for a turbo unfortunately!) and would like to work out the minor things like an MSD ignition system and new spark plugs ect along with some astetic stuff. Please, suggest away.

*Cough*Stock*cough*

Save your money for the turbo. MSD and new plugs are not going to make your car an Instant Frappachino Hot-Rod.

The MSD programmable ignition can be a very good mod, and very useful in the future if you plan on going turbo or N2O. You can program it to retard the timing when spraying, and use it to tune when you go turbo. It also has 3 rev limiters. You can program one for launch and get consistent times, and raise the stock rev limit if you want. I don't know the model number, it is like DSI4 or something like that.

Ignition...

If you are going programable, I would look at Electromotive or SDS...

The MSD system is gonna be a DIS2 for our cars (two coil packs). It's really not a bad system. Runs about $300.00. Just make sure that you run only copper plugs and the plug wires will handle the current cause the module jumps up the spark to 30,000 volts.

You can run Copper or Iridium plugs just not Platnum with the MSD unit....and if you are going to upgrade the ignition go for the programmable DIS2 you will be much happier as you can talor it to your needs....runs about 440 through summit racing.

An all out ignition system gives little gains with only bolt ons on your car. The real gains of an ignition system can be seen when you're running N2O,Turbo, or an all out race N/A setup. Of course, it is your money, so who's to tell you how to spend it. $400 can get you coilovers and for another $150 you can get some Rota's. I say grab the new plugs and wires, take your ride to a dyno, do a baseline run. Then slap in the new plugs and wires and see what you've gained. I'd appreciate it if someone went of their way to do it.

Just to say your not exactly correct...

GRM put a programable ignition on their Project Miata. They only had simple bolt ons, intake, header and exhaust. They got almost another 30 horsepower switching over to the programable system.

Granted that's probably an isolated case, but generally you are right. A stand alone won't normally give you that much with simple bolt ons.

However, if you plan on going any of the routes you mentioned, it doesn't hurt in the slightest.

WHAT!?!

Dear God! 30 horsepower with only an ignition system! Sorry, I just don't believe it. Maybe you mean they got 30 more hp with the ignition system AND the bolt-ons. (compaired to stock) I've only seen those types of gains from complete engine management systems on boosted cars. Hell, if your right, lets them to make an ignition system for our cars! ;)

AMEN. Unless you're going turbo or NOS, save your money. MSD isn't worth it. Oh, and DON'T buy the high-end (forgot the materials) plugs. They're actually bad for our cars.

I recommend you spend $3 (or whatever) and get the next sport compact car mag that updates project MP3. They'll list mods and dynos for everything they do.

Go read the article if you don't believe me. They were pretty surprised as well. I'll track down the issue so you can find out for yourself.

Grassroots Motorsports Magazine doesn't lie, they showed the the dyno sheets and everything.

And, it was 30 from the programmable set-up being tuned. They had already tested and shown what the bolt ons did by themselves.
