I have a 2008 CX-9 GT with the 20" rims and tires. If this has been asked before, forgive me because I could not find it.

Will a full size 20" tire and rim fit where the temp spare tire is now??

Thanks in advance.

Tom

Hi Tom.

I took a quick look in the owner's manual, and they state that a flat tire should not be placed where the temporary spare tire went, so my guess is either it won't fit, and/or the attachment parts are not designed to handle the additional size and weight of the 20" tire and rim.

That is such a stupid design... what if you have 7 passengers and some luggages and get a flat? 2 people is going to hug the tire for the rest of the trips? :D

They'd probably prefer to hug some of their luggage. But yeah, the flat tire/wheel combo is intended to sit sideways behind the third seat. There is even a velcro strap on the back of the 3rd seat to hold it in place.

How about it being vertical and only taking one of the seats in the back? A person should have a tarp with them for sure otherwise that interior is going to get some extra coating (strike)

It doesn't take any seats, all 7 passengers still have seats, the tire does sit vertically behind the third row seat. (where some of their luggage would be, so both the tire and the luggage can't occupy the same space)

EDIT: not sure if you meant that the tire could just sit on one of those 3rd row seats, and only taking up one spot, and still leaving room for luggage. If so, that could work, but it would probably make more sense to move the luggage up to that presumed empty 3rd row seat than the tire.

The owners manual says no.

I've had the spare out to clean it after winter debris has piled up on it and looking underneath I don't think a full sized wheel will fit there. It would hang too low and the tire would be right up against both mufflers, or pretty darned close. I also doubt the full size wheel would clear the rear bumper supports or trailer hitch receiver if that's installed.

But, just to try it, I have an extra set of 18" factory take offs I bought from a member here and I'll attempt hanging one of them this weekend to see what sort of issues there are.

[Edit]

End result:

There's no way to stow a normal wheel underneath the load floor. The reason is that the center hole of the alloy wheel, where the center trim plug goes, is too small to allow the lift cables retaining flange and hub to pass through it.

The assembly might fit, but the tire would be right up against both mufflers and the exhaust pipe where it splits behind the rear axle and it would hang down quite far.

Overall, not a desirable or possible thing to do.

Ted
