Sparco Harness Bar

:
2003 Black Mica MSP
I was reading my Turbo Magazine while at work the other day and noticed an add for a harness bar so that you can mount your harnesses to it and be safe instead of mounting them to the floor. Anyone have this in their MSP, Im thinking about doing something like this but I am curious to find out if it would fit well.

Matt

i have thought about a custom one because sparco wont produce them for our cars but it would be tough.

Harness's without a rollcage / bar is dangerous and you can be killed.
Actually it depends on how it is installed. The anchor point must be within 4" of the top of the scapula. Harness bars can work well, but the stock belts are best on the street.

Sparco is not manufacturing harness bars for the Protege, and not planning on it.

for autocross or light track work they would probably work well.

No, I'm talking in the event of a rollover without a cage or a front / rear end accident. With a 4 point harness you will slide out the bottom, submarine, and head under the dash and probably have the air bag smash you in the face on top of the already broken body parts consisting to you going under the dash. Too add, in the event of a rollover you will be stuck in the harness and then break your neck because the harness is holding you in to the seat and it not giving way.

Note: Take it with a grain of salt if you want.

last time i checked, that's what a harness is supposed to do. i think i'll check again tho, you know, just to make sure.
if your right... gee, i hope my seatbelt reels don't catch a lock if someone rearends me or i roll the speed...

yeh sparco was being a bunch of dong slappers when i called to ask if about the harness bars for the msp

Like I said, take it with a grain of salt I could care less. If you roll the car and the roof comes down onto your head the harness will not allow your body to move and you will most likely break your neck or have a sweetly compressed spine, unless of course you're a midget.

???why would seatbelts give away in the event of a crash msp4you? that would render them useless.

http://www.soloracer.com/harnessfaq.html

"Using a harness system on the street or track without a rollbar/cage in your car, could cause serious injury if your vehicle were to be involved in a rollover accident and the roof were to collapse. If you want to use a race harness on the street or at driving schools and track events, get a good rollbar or cage installed in your car. Otherwise, continue to use your factory seat belts!"

The stock belt allows you to slide and avoid being stuck straight up in the seat.

I find it amazing that people will opt for something as an act of convenience in light of the fact that it has the potential to kill them.

Again, I say if you want the benefits of a harness get a roll bar or a cage. You'll be safer all around street or track, not too mention that your chasis will be stiffer for an added benefit to handling.

Wow, thanks for all the insight, I had no idea that the harness bar without the rollcage would/potentially kill you. I knew that it would be a great idea to have a harness bar if you had a harness to make sure it doesnt compress your spine if you were in an accident, so I figured when I got seats and harnesses that it would be a great idea to get the harness bar. Hmmm now I am going to have to get the cage first and then all the other goodies. This seems to be a long time in the future too.

Plus its too bad that Sparco isnt making one for the Protege, that blows. But thanks for the info anyway.

I think the people on here who wrecked their car had these. Many people own themselves in msp's and harness bars

This post makes absolutely no sense. (scratch)

and please, if you guys go putting cages in your MSP, then:

-use the proper materials!!!!!! dont get a "pipe bender" from harbor freight and some schedule 40 plumbing pipe. in addition to being unbelievably heavy, the tensile strength is all wrong and the cage will likely shatter on a sharp impact. proper materials, in my opinion, means 4130 chrome-moly tubing.

-use the proper bender! make sure its a mandrel bender. jd-squared makes the best IMO. www.jd2.com is their site. the model 3 is plenty for what we would need, and it is easily modifiable for use with an air-over-hydraulic ram if you're lazy or a wuss and cant pull the lever.. and get the degree wheel, youll need it.

-dont forget to tie into the firewall! dont forget to mount your seats on the cage! dont forget padding! and DONT COMPROMISE! make sure you triangulate, gusset where necessary, and make sure you know how to weld. no novice welding on your cage! as a rule of thumb, pretty welds=strong welds. i personally wouldnt use any process but GTAW (tig). go for the "stack of dimes" look and youll be fine..

sorry for the soap box :) i come from the off-road world where this stuff is extraordinarily important. a crappy cage can make an accident worse for you than if you didnt have one.

anyone out there have a cage in their MSP? id love to see pix.

just for everybody's info i only have 4 pt harness's and i was involved in a front end collision at 60 and did not move an inch nor did i slide under the harness.... sorry to revamp this thread but i am just looking for a harness and found it. but i am also considering having my friend (an awesome welder and 4 by enthusiest so he has built many cages) build me a full cage this winter
anyway just my experience

Well the MSP has a cross beam aka OEM roll cage already in the car that I believe the other stock protege types dont have, please correct me if Im wrong?

Why not use the "latch" or whatever they're called baby seat anchors? Or are they not rated for that kind of stress.
