Snow Tires and steel Rims

Hi,

I am a bit new to the p5 world, but I used to own a saab 9000 turbo. I really like the p5.

My question is regarding which steel rims will fit. Any Mazda 5 hold lug? I would like to go to the junk yard and pick them.

Also does anyone know what size/ profile to go with?
Is 15 inch better than 16 inch? (I really want to get steel rims instead of using the stock 16' rims)

TIA

I was wondering the same thing. I checked tirerack.com, but they don't have steelies available.

I'm looking for some 15's and tires for my P5 with no hubcabs, just the smaller centercap style hubcap. I was thinking some decent all-season, not just ol snow tires.

Most people go with 15"s for snow tires, not sure why though. Perhaps if you're going to sacrifice looks with the steelies you might as well gain some comfort.

If you find some decent looking hubcaps please post where you found them because I have yet to find a hubcap that doesn't look like it belongs on the Walmart 50% off rack.

Do you already have the tires? During the winter months Tire Rack has steel/tire bundles I believe. Seemed like good prices last year when I was considering it.

I am running 15" Steel with 185/60's I believe.....haven't dug them out yet....but judging by the temp today it will be soon.

Any Mazda dealer should be able to give you the correct size.

Tire Rack shows to have 15" and 16" steel for the P5.

Am going to be moving to Allentown, PA - anyone think I might need a set? Residents in that area say they do not get much snow. A waste of money?

Thanks ahead.

You should be set with all-seasons that have a decent amount of tread. However, it all depends upon how hilly an area you will be in and how much you must drive when it is snowing.

alllentown can get some snow, but they are pretty good about keeping the roads clean. it's not buffalo, ny or anything. 6-8" is a pretty normal snowfall.

so you don't NEED snow tires. but they might be a good choice if you don't want to run your stock wheels through the huge amounts of salt and sand that get put down on the roads up here. the stock dunlops aren't great in the snow, but i've never had a problem. however, if you don't mind spending the money, might as well get 'em, esp if you're from texas and don't have a lot of snow-driving experience. better safe than sorry.

if i had the $$, i'd have a set of snows for my car.

instead of a set of new ugly steelies, try finding a set of used ugly 15" aluminum rims off, say a mazda MX-6 or 626. there are plenty of sets of 15x6" wheels out there for ~<$50.

if you really want new steelies, tire rack usually sells packages.

check out discounttire.com

they are better than tire rack, price and free shipping. i use 14' on my Protege5 with 195/65/14 tires......work very well in the snow.

the dunlops suck in the snow and where so you live???

I had no problems driving on my stock tires the last two winters...but they're running out of tread so I got a set of snows for this winter.

Does anyone know where to get caps like these for the 15 and 14 inch steelies? (Yea, it's a pic of a CrownVic PI wheel)

I was using some generic steelies w/ 195/55/15 snows. No hubcentric rings either.

I torqued them to 87 lb/ft. And re-checked them about a week later.

I tell you that I drive really fast in the winter and take turns fast too.

The wheels and tires stay on.
