Smasung Galaxy S3 Phonebook Download Issues

I am having issues downloading and overwriting the phone book from my Samsung Galaxy S3. The manual says the S3 is fully compatible with the audio system, I've tried many times with only one early success when the entire phone book was downloaded. All the other times (and I've tried many) it only seems to download one "contact"......... that being me.

I spoke the the Mazda helpline and they say that it'll only work if my contacts are saved to the phone - not the sim, nor Google+ (which is where I keep mine) so I saved some to my phone and tried again........ It didn't work.

The audio system reads and plays all the tunes from my phone via Blue tooth without any problems, and seems to work fine in every other way - is just the phone book download that's the problem.

The car is at my dealer at the moment they say it syncs fine with the service managers iphone - which is no good to me!

Is anyone else having issues or got fixes?

Thanks

Ian

I can confirm iPhone 6 works just fine. Not sure why Android is having this issue.

where do you keep your contacts on the phone or in the cloud?

I'm having the same issue with my Nexus 4 but only tried once ... I'll report back after another attempt.

I had the same problem with my Samsung Galaxy S-3 and the Bluetooth radio setup on my Cx-5 Sport. There's an app-- Bluetooth Phonebook for $1.95 on the Playstore that solves the problem.

Hey fantastic – I have an S3 too and have had this problem ever since first day I tried the sync. Saw this post, downloaded the app, start download phonebook to the infotainment, system, and it WORKS!

Thanks! 

I have a samsung S3 and didnt need the app at all. If you have a usb plug in your car do not plug up the phone until everything for the bluetooth connects. The phone will ring 3 different times asking for permissions to connect to car for media, phone, and something else cant remember lol. Say yes to all and make sure you check do not ask again.

It depends on the operator and firmware. There are some s3 firmwares with pbap bluetooth profile installed and other dont.
If you have connecting issues (only few contacta synced or no phhonecalls synced....) you have to install phonebook app to solve this.
Samsung is adding and removing this feature on the firmwares in a some random way.

i have an S3 that does the same and it sucks cause all the love is for iOS when it comes to bluetooth systems in cars. for you Android users when you use bluetooth does it show the song name? cause i know it does for my wifes iPhone 5 but not for my S3 :(

My S2 works ok. Make sure you dont have the stereo playing (any audio) while downloading. I had trouble until I shut the stereo off. Texting and calling works great.

I have a Galaxy S3 (Sprint version) and have no issues with the phonebook. The only thing I have found is that if I have a contact listed as a favorite, for some reason I have to download those separately. I have had issues with the text messaging not working all the time, but a profile update and re-sync to the car usually fixes the issue. My understanding from Mazda is that the iPhone does not work with Mazda's SMS feature. Anybody know if this is true?

Supposedly, if you use Android 4.1 or higher (Jelly bean), this works.

Here's what I posted on the ********** board...

Guys this is my first post on this board. I'll make this short and sweet. I work on vehicle telematics for a living. We actually build the software that runs on the headunits and mobile phones. I know a thing or two about how this actually works. Not to mention I tested this on my car.

Issue 1:

Why does phonebook transfer not work?

First delete pairing history on both HU and HS. Once this is complete pair the two devices again. When downloading contacts (VCF) you must ensure that they do not contain anything other than text only. Mazda HU phonebook does not support anything outside of a text format.

WTH does that mean?

It means it will fail if you have images e.g. Facebook, LinkedIn, etc... attached to contact.

So what now?

Create contacts only using name and number. You can easily do this on Android by creating contacts in your Google account and re-sync to phone.

How do you know this?

I work on this stuff everyday unfortunately. Lastly I verified this by testing it out on my own car. 2014 Mazda 6 manual Touring (no nav). My wife has her FB info linked in VCF file which causes hers to fail. I simply created a new contact for her and only used name and number.

Issue 2:

The messaging feature doesn't work?

It actually does. If you are using Android, you need to check a few things. Namely your OS version. Android OS 4.1 or newer does not support MAP protocol.

Who's fault is this?

Google

How do I make this work?

Use a phone that's certified on the Mazda manual. Or use a phone with an OS that supports MAP protocol.

Why is the Mazda supported list so small?

From a business perspective it's very expensive to test and certify handsets to work in parallel with head units. Therefore a business decision is made on market saturation e.g. user base of handset. OEMs are more likely to certify handsets with the largest user base. This covers a larger pool of customers. This is why everyone unfortunately loves iPhone. There are very few differences between iPhone models other than the obvious, hardware.

What does this mean to me?

Just because it's not certified does not mean it won't work. You'll have to simply try your luck. For Android users if your phone is on OS 4.1 or newer you will need to wait for Google to fix this. It might be rolled out in the 4.3 release if you are lucky enough to get it. Or they may never fix it and you will be SOL.

What other options other than buying a new phone or head unit do I have?

You can try your luck with modified custom ROMs/Kernels/Radios. Do this at your own risk. For some Android users this appears to work at the cost of stability of the overall OS. I have not verified this, nor do I want to try. I have personal experience using custom ROMs and they are extremely problematic in my opinion.

I hope this helps... feel free to PM me for an additional questions. Don't waste your time with Mazda customer service. They won't have a clue what you're talking about. You're going to get a response and they will only validate and support you if you phone is on the list. Even in that case all they will do is file a ticket with the head unit manf. This is not a fix on Mazda's end FYI.

S3 BT Connection

any SGS3 owners out there?

I have a 2 week old Mazda 3 i Grand Touring. Apparently Mazda is working on the nav problems but can't seem to figure out why my Samsung Galaxy 3 cannot make audio calls without being disconnected.
My carrier does not know what the problem is and Samsung said not compatible but I don't think that is true. Very, very disappointing. I can make calls from my phone and recive incoming calls. NOT FUN
