smart key issue HELP!

Hey everyone,

To give everyone a kind of long story, I am a freshman in college. With one week left of school my dad let me take his 2008 CX-9 GT with me back to school so I could schlep all my crap home. He has the little credit card smart card thingy, and I lost the little manual key part for it at a party. Long story short, if he finds out that I lost it he will pretty much chop a certain area of my body off so that my voices raises a couple of octaves.

I am wondering if I go to the Mazda dealership and give them the Vin # if they would be able to cut me just the manual part of the key. Here is my problem however, my mom has the other key with her at home, and I would like to get a new manual key before I go home May 7. Can Mazda cut the key without a duplicate and just the vin and credit card part? Does anyone know how much a new manual key costs?

Sorry for the obnoxious story, and I thank you in advance for the help.

Mike

Mike:
The answers are to the best of my knowledge only
1) I don't think the dealer sells the metal key. Try eBay to see if anyone is selling a blank one.
2) In order to cut the key, you need the key code (this came with the CX9 in the manual packet). With the code, and a blank metal key, your dealer can cut the metal key for you. I heard it is laser-cut, not the usually mechanical duplication process.

Good luck,

Mike,

Just to clarify on Ceric's #2 answer. The dealership can obtain the key code with the VIN#, however, here in the state of California, we the dealerships require proof of ownership before we can cut a key to anyone (for theft security reasons of course). So, if you live in California or your state follows the same law, you are going to have trouble getting the parts department to cut a duplicate key with the code, unless of course you encounter a non-law abiding employee or your name is exactly the same as the one on the vehicle registration. Godd luck!

Anyone know how much it would cost to do this if you had all the ownership information? My wife lost the key part the other day. Apparently it does not fit in there snugly enough for her to keep it in there... Luckily she's still able to start the car until the battery dies on the smart card of course.

By the way, the crappy battery of this smartkey costs a crappy amount of $ to change it as well. Costed me 80 cents! LOL
Now you are talking!!! (stripper)

Since you only lost the metal key, you effectively have TWO working electronic SmartKeys. Therefore, you get to program it yourself. All you need is the cost of a new blank key from dealership or elsewhere. Make sure it is brand new. Sometimes, a programmed one cannot be reprogrammed again.
Save yourself some troubles, buy a brand new key.
Programming instructions can be found on this forum. If not, send me a PM.
The key costs about less than $100 on eBay.
However, you are running a risk of getting an used one or one that is DoA.
It is your call. At dealership, it may costs about less than $150 or so.
Program it yourself.

Hmmm,
I think that key is not part of the SmartCard by looking at the illustration.

Is this even an issue any more? The guy asked over a week ago, and hasn't posted since.
